I
peer out my tinted Audi window waiting for him to make his regular exit from
the obnoxious downtown building. Excitement wells up inside me as it always
does at the thought of seeing his beautiful face…his beautifully ugly, evil
face. My fingers tap angrily against the steering wheel—waiting…always waiting.
My mind falls down the rabbit hole and unwanted tears fill my eyes as I relive
every moment I ever shared with Conrad Daniels.
It’s
6:15p.m. My eyes widen, I swallow a lump in my throat. He’s late—he’s never
late. My hand squeezes the Starbucks cup and I jump when scalding hot coffee
pierces my skin. Something is wrong. He knows. I think to
myself. My eyes scan the building staring into the glass doors as if I can will
them to see through the walls like some kind of cape-wearing super bitch.
Time ticks by. Each passing second getting louder— threatening to burst my
eardrums. The sound of my teeth grinding fills my head as I panic. My hands
tighten on the wheel and I press my face as close to the windshield as
possible, eyes locked on the revolving glass door. Come on! I scream in my
head. Walk out now! I bite my lip and the taste of copper fills my mouth. I
hiss but wait…Is that…
Yes! My
salvation. It was him. He was still making his way to the door—but I
knew that outline anywhere. I fight the gag I feel sliding up my throat and
exhale. I watch him make his way out the door and I smile. Everything
is going according to plan.
