NBTM + #Giveaway: Betrayer by Leslie D. Soule @Falcondraco @GoddessFish

Betrayer
by Leslie D. Soule
GENRE:   Fantasy

BLURB:

With five crystals to destroy, in order to rob the dark lord Malegaunt of his power, Ash Kensington's path is set. She begins a quest with the talking cat, Greymalkin, and her wyvern, Slick. But when she meets up with the handsome dragon slayer, Draeon, her senses overwhelm her, and she becomes distracted. Will she be able to destroy the crystals in time to challenge Malegaunt?

Excerpt:

“What can I do for ya?”

She looked at the bartender and said sorrowfully, “Give me a spell to make me forget.” I’ve wasted so much time, she thought to herself, and now I don’t know if I can get back on track. Malegaunt is out there, and none of the crystals have been destroyed. It drove her mad.

He shook his head and pushed a pint of dark beer across the bar. “This is the best magic I know. That’s why I’m a bartender.” He pointed down the bar a ways to a man who looked to be in his forties, if not older. He was clothed in a black coat, and his stubbled face was hunched over a glass of what looked like whiskey on the rocks. “Now, that guy over there, on the other hand, he might be able to help ya. People call him the Oracle of the Oasis,” he informed her.

Interview with Leslie D. Soule

What inspired you to write Betrayer?

Well, I went through a period of a couple years when I didn’t write anything. I’d written the first two books of the Fallenwood Chronicles and the second one had gotten some bad reviews. There’s this saying – “Never let success get to your head, or failure get to your heart.” Well I let failure get to my heart. Everything seemed to be going wrong in my life – I was stuck in a job I hated, had been through the worst relationship I can imagine, and had no idea how to deal with all this pain I felt. But eventually, I went back to writing, as a way to cope. I’ve always sort of used it as therapy.

Can you tell us a little bit about the next books in The Fallenwood Chronicles or what you have planned for the future?

Well, the series will end with book 4, and will be a quadrilogy. I’ve planned it that way for quite some time. Ash Kensington is on a quest to find out what is wrong with the fantasy world Fallenwood. Eventually she comes to realize that there’s this evil entity called Malegaunt, who’s been challenging her. The story continues on through book 3 – which is based on my real-life relationship with Draeon’s counterpart, who ended up being a psychopath and putting me through hell.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Betrayer?

Sure. Well, I based the main character, Ash, on myself. As the book is a metaphor for what I’ve been through, the other characters are based on real people as well – Draeon is based on my ex-boyfriend and his friends in the novel are based on his friends in real life – Gustav, Kiri, and Katarina. They were fire performers in real life, too.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

I love Tolkien’s writing because of the world he created, with Middle-Earth. I aspire to be like him, and I marvel at his creation of the elves, ents, hobbits, and other creatures that populate his world.

If you could time-travel would you travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you like to visit this particular time period?

I would travel to the past and visit family members who have moved on. Other periods in world history do not concern me so much as the more personal aspects of my own life. There’s no telling what life would be if you journey to any particular time, but if I were to go back in time, I think I’d have a pretty good idea of what I’d be in for.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Yes. I have a big dog named Ginger. She’s a sweetie. I also have a corn snake who’s a morph. He’s pink-looking and is named Eros. My roommate has cats, and the black one named Rogue seems to have adopted me – she often hangs out in my room & I have this blue plush chair that she loves. I crafted a scepter and bought a dollar-store crown that I’ve added to the chair, to make her feel more comfortable there.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us today.
