Sometimes we all have to make room for new additions to our family. It can be hard but it also can be fun. That is exactly what happened to Midnight one day when his mommy brought home a new little brother named Snowball to be his best friend. Little did he know how silly and fun this new little brother can be. This story follows the silly shenanigans of two cats who are learning to get along and become family.

Interview with Lisa Jacovsky

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I currently have 18 books written, 5 of which are published. 2 more are coming this year and then there will be 3 or 4 more next year. Lots to come!

Favorite honestly has to be Purrrfect as I am. I did not realize how much this book meant to me until I started seeing it come together with the illustrations. I was very nervous about this book and making sure the cats came off beautifully. Then the illustrator, an amazing woman who happens to have autism, was kind enough to say to my request to illustrate. And just did a job so much better than I could have imagined. Her style is my favorite that I have ever utilized and I could not be more in love with this book. Seeing it all come together, the illustrations just bring my story to life in a way that is so beautiful. It easily became my favorite once I saw the final product.

If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

There are actually going to be 4 in total books in the series. There are 2 from midnights point of view and two from snowballs point of view. Number 2 is called mischievous cat brothers from snowballs point of view and will come out in 2024. No release date yet but stay tuned!! I promise they are just as fun and a bit more silly too! 😉

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

The way I write my books they are part of a series but each one can stand its own. So far, if you buy one book from a series you would not need the other books to understand it. That could always change but so far that is how the writing has flowed out.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

I did some research looking into things that describe cats and would be noticeable and easily associated with cats. I also wanted something that would describe a cat as being silly but without using that word. That was not easy to do! Lol I did a lot of searching and looking to find the right word. Then I wanted to use the word cat brothers so the audience knew it was about two cats. For me, I like my titles to be a glimpse into the main story line. I thought rascal would be a perfect way to describe the silly things my kitties can do.

How long did it take you to write this book?

It took a few months to write the book. i did some rewrites and updated the story a few times to find the perfect things to put in, there were a lot!

    What does the title mean?

The title means really describes my one cat. My one cat is a total rascal and very silly! Hes the baby of my two cats, mr. snowball and it definitely has not been a dully day since he arrived lol. My other cat midnight is very much a lapcat but he loves to wrestle with his brother. I thought it would be great to use words that describe the silliness my one cat can get into but also use the words cat brothers because midnight really acts like a great big brother to snowball.

What did you learn when writing the book?

I learned how much I really love animals and cats in particular. The two cats in the book are my actual cats and the story is actual events that my cats have done. The pictures are mostly based on my own pictures too. It really made me realize how much I adore these two little boys. How much I just really adore cats. I always thought I would be more of a dog person but growing up tigers were always my favorite animals. I still will adopt a dog one day and love dogs, but I think cats will always have the most special place in my heart.

    What surprised you the most?

How easily it was to write this book. My dad is the one that suggested I write this book and at first I was skeptical. But then I said ok and sat down to write. And it just flowed! I absolutely love being able to write this book and then the next 3 flowed even easier lol

Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?

Nope and so far not sure if that is something that would be in my style. Ya never know in the future though.

What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?

I honestly did not do too much lol I really tried to think of Snowball’s silly personality and tried to make sure I sounded how he could if he spoke human. I really tried to based off of their personalities the most.
