As the clock ticks down to a sinister ultimatum, will Tammy outsmart the sociopath or fall prey to a deadly game of cat and mouse?
Interview with Leah Brewer
Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction?
It’s hard to pinpoint one book. I had surgery to remove Ovarian Cancer in 2019. I read a lot of books by Patricia Bradley and Christy Barritt during recovery. These books helped me forget my pain, my worries, my struggles as I was transported to new places and grew to love new people. That’s what I want to do for others.
How do you select the names of your characters?
Many of my characters are named after people I know or in memory of loved ones. Sometimes, I look around the room I’m in and pick a name off a poster, book, or TV screen!
Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
No secrets, but I like to pepper in funny situations (with a twist) that have happened to people I know.
What was your hardest scene to write?
When Tammy and Jace first reconnected.
Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Both. I plan to use some of the same characters, but I don’t plan to leave anyone hanging on any of the endings.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
Although I call To Find a Killer my murder book, my main goals were to make people smile and show that when people pull together, they can accomplish great things.
What inspired you to write To Find a Killer?
My family and I camped at Davidsonville Historic State Park in 2020. I found the history very interesting, and I thought that area was a perfect location for a mystery.
Can you tell us a little bit about the next books in A Natural State Murder Mystery series or what you have planned for the future?
I am working on two novels: the fourth in my Seeds of Faith series titled Lottie’s Journey and the second in A Natural Stare Murder Mystery series (title pending). Lottie’s Journey will tell the story of Lottie McKenna, a woman who has been addicted to drugs and alcohol since her teenage years. It will be a raw look at how addiction not only affects the person but also their family, specifically Lottie’s daughter, Rhnae. We will see how Lottie handles her struggles and deals with the aftermath of damaged relationships, insecurities and more. Stay tuned for more info on both books!
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in To Find a Killer?
Tammy Sharp is a tough but flawed detective living with scars from a past betrayal. Jace Eubanks lives with regrets but is determined to do what it takes to make things right with those he loves. Ruby Sharp is a Southern Belle who wants to spread happiness. Obie Wilson is the local sheriff with secrets. Lorene Pankey is a hilarious smart aleck with a good heart.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I laughed a lot! But mostly, I enjoyed getting to know the people who call Pocahontas and the surrounding areas home. They have been supportive and accommodating!
