Blurb:
Red mirrored scales race up my arms as the haze of pain blurs my vision. My bones crack, breaking to realign. I scream. It is then that the realization of my unavoidable fate sinks in; I am of a dying race. I am dragon.
Aurora Megalos, orphaned and teetering on the edge of adulthood, thought finding her past would curb the sting of being an outcast. Having no memories of the time before she awoke on her foster mother's doorstep, she yearns for the emptiness inside her to be filled. With her fellow orphaned best friend, Fenn, by her side, she has nothing to lose and everything to gain. But something powerful stirred within her that she couldn't explain. Something wanted out.
In the dark of night, a crazed Seer, dubbed Mr.Creepy, erases everything she's ever known with an impending prophecy. She now faces two paths. Return to her true home to protect a dying race against a growing evil, or stay hidden in the safety of our realm with a shot at a true love. With a vengeful Arch Enemy stopping at nothing to see her dead, she's running out of time; a decision must be made. What would you choose?

Excerpt Three:
From Chapter 3
As I walked Mr. Creepy to the door and went to lock it behind him, his arm shot out and grabbed onto my wrist in a sumo death grip. The pupils to his eyes went white, churning the building fear in my stomach. His grip tightened. And then he spoke: "Of dragon born, a conqueror prevails. The chosen one fated to protect the dying race. Third of three deemed protector to the progeny. The other marked for revenge. The book of life pages turn yet unwritten. The canvas to your mortal soul. The connection to your immortal enemy. A death will come to He that breaks the barrier."
A flash of white so bright it nearly blinded me shone through his eyes while he spoke, and then he blinked them back to normal. That sound of his voice, the sound of a thousand voices speaking through one, resounded in my head.
"Let GO of me!" I yelled. Fenn was already behind me, circling his arm around my waist and yanking the guys grip off of me. He shoved the guy back, moving to close the door, but I stopped him, my heart beating wildly against my chest.
"Don't," I cried out, shoving Fenn out of the way as I rushed to face Mr. Creepy again. A better time to get answers couldn't have slapped me in the face any harder.
"Who are you?" I asked, breath rushing out of me while holding the door open. Mr. Creepy stood still, eyes unmoving.
"Rory, get back, he's dangerous. Didn't you see what just happened? Don't do this," Fenn pleaded. I jerked my head around to face him, scrunching my eyes in annoyance, and said, "Just give me a minute."
He huffed and then stepped back, clearly angry with me.
I turned to Mr. Creepy. "You can't just waltz in here, stalk me all day, then go all prophet on me and not explain who you are and why you are doing this to me." I grabbed his pasty arm and pulled him back into the restaurant. Everyone had left so I figured this was the best place to confront him. "So again I ask, who are you?"
I crossed my arms and waited, impatiently tapping my foot as the silent seconds seemed to drag on forever.
His chest puffed up. "I am the answer to your questions." He stuck his chin out. "And here you stand so defiant and demanding answers while you should be questioning who you are."
I stepped back towards Fenn, seeking that protected feeling he always gave off, as the reality of what Mr. Creepy had said hit home.
"Why do you think I stopped you?" My eyes fell to the floor. "Obviously because I do question who I am," I rushed out. "Instead of mocking me, why don't you try explaining? The pendant…your eyes…my eyes…my strange abilities with fire. Why is all of this happening?" I asked boldly.
"Because you are the progeny, the chosen one," he answered, pausing to let it sink in. I took a step back.
"The progeny? To what? What am I chosen for?"
Author Interview:
The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write Born in Flames?
Candace Knoebel: I had previously thought of the idea back in 2007, but never tried to sit down and write. Probably because I didn't think I could. It came back to me in 2009 after I finished a series that left me feeling empty when complete. I didn't want to read anything else for awhile and for some reason, the idea popped back up and I figured I would write some of it down. At that point in time I had no idea that it would shape into a novel, thusly changing my goals in life.
The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Candace Knoebel: I was 22 when I wrote my first novel (this novel). Before that, I had never considered myself a writer. I loved writing, I just didn't know that I could make a career out of it. But when the idea struck me for this trilogy, it struck hard and I couldn't resist writing it. When it was complete, the feeling inside of me was one that I would forever be addicted to.
The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?
Candace Knoebel: I was around 11. I was given the first novel in the Harry Potter series and was hooked from then on to reading.
The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
Candace Knoebel: Young adult, anything fantasy, paranormal, dystopian, new adult…I guess I will try to read anything.
The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?
Candace Knoebel: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Candace Knoebel: J.K. Rowling because she was my first novel and her words and world was so believable and real. It was magic.
The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?
Candace Knoebel: Oh man, I'm not sure I would. I love where I am at right now. I think going back would be not only a culture shock, but confusing.
The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?
Candace Knoebel: I think it has its ups and downs. Most days it flows pretty easily, but I am prone to writers block just like anyone else. It all depends on the day, my mood, what point in the story I am at, and what is happening in my life at that moment.
The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
Candace Knoebel: Lol, yes I do! I have a dog and two cats. My dog's name is Lily and she is a beagle/hound mix we rescued from the pound. My two cats are males, Cleotus and Jasper, and were rescued from the mall. Strangely, they all get along.
The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
Candace Knoebel: Any form of Spanish food is my favorite. I could eat it every single day.
The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?
Candace Knoebel: Take in the good and ignore the bad. You can't please everyone and don't expect to. It's just the way the world works. Also, don't give up. If you want it, don't let opinions sway you from your dream. Your dreams are all you have.
About the Author:
Candace Knoebel had dreamed of being a dancer ever since she could remember. With a love of all things art, she saw herself moving to New York and pursuing her passion as an artist. But all that changed on October 10th, 2002 when she met the love of her life. Her dreams diverged and after marrying her high school sweetheart and having two beautiful children, she realized she missed her creative side.
Growing up alongside the Harry Potter series, Candace found herself missing the epicosity of a story that pulls you in and won't let you go. In 2009, she began dreaming up characters that would mold her first novel. Through lunch breaks and late nights, after putting her kids to bed, she built a world where she could escape the ever-pressing days of an eight to five Purgatory. She found her calling in life and knew this was more than dancing could've ever meant to her.
Once complete in 2010, she began the grueling process of finding a publisher. With relentless determination, she was finally able to realize her dream in December of 2011 when 48fourteen offered her a publishing contract. With a HUGE yes and a happy dance, she continues her Trilogy.
