Broken Flight
(Angels of Punishment #1)
by Elle J Rossi
Anna James never planned on dying at age nineteen or ending up somewhere other than heaven. Five years later, her heart is still on Earth with her soulmate Grey, while the rest of her struggles to survive in Beyond. Not quite heaven and a lot like hell, Beyond is a proving ground where only the strongest souls are allowed to move on. With no way out, Anna keeps her head down and plays by the rules… Until she learns Grey is about to die.
Grey Wilson would give anything to go back and stop the accident that ripped Anna from his arms. But when Anna appears on Earth again, he quickly realizes things can never be as they were. Death and Beyond have changed her; brought out the dark side and dimmed her inner light. Before they can even revel in this semblance of a miracle, Grey and Anna find themselves in the middle of an angelic civil war where sabotage and danger lurk around every corner.
Anna's dark side is exactly what Azrael - the leader of the Angels of Punishment - craves. When Azrael lays out his demands, Anna will have to make the biggest decision of her life.
My Review
The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.
Anna is an angel who lives in Beyond which is not exactly Heaven. There are different levels in Heaven and Beyond is like a layover. Each level has its own leader. There are others who want to lead at the highest level and will challenge the leaders. These are angels but it is just like people who want to be in charge you know the top dog. It's like saying I am the best. Or you do want I say.
The angel Azrael is the leader of Beyond but wants to be the top dog at the highest level. He is also the top Angel Of Punishment or AOP. He will do whatever it takes and use whoever to get there. Azrael likes to play mind game with his angels. His AOP's or domion's as Anna likes to call them are afraid of him and jumps to do his bidding. They also walk around on egg shells around him. They do not want him to punish them. He has crimson wings and stands about or over two stories tall and wing span around 20 feet.
Then there is Sarafina or Sara. She reads minds but only at a certain distance. Sara loves punishing others and seeing their fear.
And then there is Michale who misses a girl Lyssa or maybe she is his wife who is still on earth. Michale loved/loves this girl a lot and only wants to be with her. He thinks about her a lot. Michale is not quiet like Azrael's other AOP's he is not as mean as they are but he will still jump when Azrael speaks.
Another one of Azrael's angels Zeke rides a horse his horse has tiny wings and can fly. Everyone wondered why Zeke rode a horse instead of flying? Zeke and his horse fought in battles together. When Zeke and his horse died they were fighting in the middle of a battle and enjoying it. Zeke and his horse both went down at the same time and never got up again. No one knows for sure what happened. Neither one had an injury. Why did they both die at the same time? Why did they not have any injuries? What caused them to die?
Last but not least we have the angel Raham who is a brown-noser. He sucks up to Azrael always trying to please him. I think Raham may just be like Azrael someone who likes to be in control and thinking that jumping to do what he is told and enjoying it will get him more brownie points than the others. He will be Azrael's favorite angel.
Azrale sent Anna and Grey who is still alive to find the sword of Peleus. The sword has magic and Azrael believes it will get him what he wants, to lead at the top level. Another angel Chrison a friend of Anna's tells Anna and Grey why he wants this sword. Grey is/was Anna's boyfriend her soulmate. When Anna and went to Beyond she was always breaking the rules and going back to earth to save Grey's life. After Anna's death Grey started doing all kinds of crazy stunts. He would do anything that put his life in danger he loved the adrenaline rush he got from all the crazy stunts. To him Anna's death was his fault and he was the one who ended her life to soon.
Anna and Grey's search for the sword of Peleus sent them to Oregon. They had to fly to get there because they were given a certain amount of time to find the sword and driving would take up too much valuable time. Anna is afraid to fly on a plane and Grey thinks this is funny because Anna is an angel. Grey ask her why she is afraid when she can fly or could before Azrael had Sara, Zeke and Michale rip her wings off her punishment for breaking the rules. Her answer it is a control thing. When she had wings it was up to her how far or how fast she went. If a plane crashed she would be stuck in a metal box and she couldn't bail out. She would just have to go with the flow.
I really liked all the characters in Broken Flight but I especially liked Anna. Anna didn't think about herself she wasn't selfish at all. Anna loved Grey more than anything more than her own life as they say. She would do anything to save Grey to keep him alive knowing that she was breaking the rules and would be punished. And no matter what the punishment was she go through it all over again and again to keep him alive. She would save him and be punished over and over as many times as it took.
It took me awhile to get into Broken Flight but it finally picked up and took off like a bat out of hades. I have not read many books about angels or fallen angels but Broken Flight is very different than all the other books about fallen angels in the way that they fall. It never said in the book that Anna was a fallen angel but she did have her wings ripped from her body. I know that in other books about fallen angels they still or most still have their wings but some do not.
If you like reading books about angels with a new twist on fallen angels then Broken Flight is the book for you. Maybe you just want a little romance of two people who are soulmates then Anna and Grey's story would be right up your alley.
