Interview
with Kayla Lavan
What
inspired you to write To Betray My King?
I always loved the idea of betrothed marriages in
romance. A man and a woman thrown together, who don’t get along at first, but
over time, they learn to love each other for the good and the bad, and the love
becomes strong because of it. It makes me feel all fuzzy inside. I also love
bodyguard romances. A man protecting a woman he can’t have. I couldn’t find
many of those books out in the world and I wanted to write my own with a
magical twist. I threw the ideas into a pot, mixed it up, put it in the oven
and let it bake for a bit, added the magical sprinkles then ta-da~! To Betray
My King was born!
Can
you tell us a little bit about the next books in To Betray My King series or
what you have planned for the future?
Of course! Each book in the Betrayal Legacy series is set
in a different realm. The first book is the Spring Realm, the second is Summer,
and the last book focuses on Winter. I took hold of the ‘forbidden love’ theme
and carried it throughout all three book ideas, as well as the ‘arranged
marriage’ plot. But love isn’t something you can command or force, and because
of that, things tend not to go as planned…
The second book is: To
Betray My Kingdom. Summer can be brutal and relentless. Strength and
fighting is everything to its people. A marriage was arranged for peace, but
the princess is kind and sweet. Her powers over plants will just wilt in the
scorching heat of Summer’s constant sun. Knowing this, her best friend and
soon-to-be guard, sacrifices her dreams and life, taking the princess’ place to
marry the cruel king in her stead…
The third book is: To
Betray Myself Winter is full of mystery, and covered in layers of snow and
ice to block out the rest of the world. Its people value power and money. Give
them enough of either and they will do anything, but making a contract with
them would be worse then the devil. An arranged marriage with their king would
be death, only someone stupid would accept… Someone who had nothing to lose.
Someone who had no choice, because no one would go near her. No one would touch
her. Because her touch meant death, and Winter was the only kingdom who didn’t
fear it.
Can
you tell us a little bit about the characters in To Betray My King?
Sure! Arianna is a kind-hearted princess with a bit of a
stubborn streak
in her. She cares for her people, and loves the forest.
She sweet, and doesn’t have any magic, but she’s not weak. She is excellent
with a bow and I considered her the female ‘green arrow’.
Roland’s only goal in his life is to please the ladies.
Over and over and over again. For now, anyway. He knows that one day he will be
king, so he goofs off and does what he wants whenever he wants because he knows
he can. Roland seems like your typical horny prince, but that isn’t everything.
Beneath, Roland is very intelligent. He understands the darkness in people, and
what they are truly capable of. He has the ability to control plants.
Last is Conrad. His father guarded the king, whose father
guarded the king, whose father guarded the king, and among all those greats, he
must guard Roland. Poor Conrad… Roland is his best friend as well as his duty,
and Conrad has the patience of solid stone. Conrad is the loyalist, and most
honorable man you will ever meet. He follows the rules and never questions
orders. Conrad is considered a workaholic, but he also has many-many siblings,
and beneath the soldier in him, he has that ‘brotherly’ personality that makes
you feel comforted. He also has the ability to control earth.
You
know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and
why?
Oh man, if you were talking about manga I would say
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of ‘One Piece’. But you’re probably talking about
books so I would definitely have to say Naomi Novik. I know a lot of people
love her work, and I can see why. I loved Uprooted.
I couldn’t sleep for three days because of that book and I was in a ‘reading
high’ through the whole thing, and loving every minute of it. Because of her I
got out of my 5 year+ reading slump, and became a book addict again. After that
I’ve been in a reading frenzy, looking for that same high again. I blame her
for every bit of it.
If
you could time-travel would you travel to the future or the past? Where would
you like to go and why would you like to visit this particular time period?
I would go back to 2010 and take all the Tangerine
Altoids I could, and hide them in a warehouse to eat on for the rest of my life
for my present self. I love those things when I was a kid, and sadly they were
taken from me! That and French Toast Crunch Cereal. Why do they always take
away the things I loved when I was a kid? Wonder Balls! Those were awesome!
Other people would say cool things like, prevent Abraham Lincoln from being
shot, or be the one doing the shooting and kill Hitler, but I mean, who doesn’t
want to eat chocolate balls while not caring they could get choked on the
Disney character shaped candy inside? It’s the simple things in life…
Do
you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
Yes. I have three fish and a dog.
I have two goldfish, one named Khal, and another named
Drogo. I also have a Betta fish named Darth Betta. And yes, I did name them
myself.
My dog is a white German Shepherd. His name is Jack. His
father’s name is: Ike Florida Snow, and his mother’s name is: Tyra Snowbanks
Florida Snow. And no, I did not name is parents, but I wish I did!
Thanks
for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us today.
No, Thank you. It was fun answering your questions!
About the Author
I've been writing half of my life, starting at the ripe old age of
13. Back then my favorite pass time was doodling in class, sleeping in class,
and studying tests or homework that was due the next class period. But by night
I lead a secret life. I would go home, turn on my computer, and get on my
dialup Internet (which makes me sound really old) and I would write. At first
it was for fun. I was brave back then and posted everything online. In the 14
years I have been writing, I have posted over 1.5 million words, all of which
is still available to read for free. My most well known story being "Fun
'N' Games at Ouran". A year or so ago I posted a one-shot that was 50k-60k
in words. Afterwards, I looked at it laughing, and said to myself "I think
I would like to get paid for this now" and then 'To Betray My King' was
born. It seems so simple as I'm sitting here, typing this for you to read, but
it's the truth. 'Betray' is my first book, but it won't be my last. I love
writing. I would never give it up for anything in the world.
