#1 – Do You See
Writing as a Career?
I
prefer to think of writing as my second act. In a play, that’s where the story
really takes off, and the characters work hard to resolve their conflicts. Writing
is my passion, the burning desire that gets me up each morning. Since retiring from
a 31-year teaching career in 2008, I have written over 500 articles and book
reviews for newspapers, magazines, and online publications. I have also written
five novels that have been released by traditional publishers.
#2 – What was the
Hardest Part of Your Writing Process?
September
2008: the first “real” month of my retirement. Everything was in place—business
cards, new computer, dreams of runaway best-seller—but my underdeveloped writing
muscles refused to budge. Thankfully, inspiration came several months later at
a creative writing workshop. I took the instructor’s advice: “Start a blog.
That’s where real writing happens.” Slowly, a writing practice emerged, and I
developed the confidence to write longer articles and eventually novels.
#3 – Did you have any
One Person Who Helped You Out with Your Writing Outside of Your Family?
It
takes many villages to launch a writer. In my case, I have been blessed with
supportive family and friends—online and offline. Whenever I need a small (or
large) dose of motivation, I attend a local meet-up of writers, sign up for a
course, or spend time on the discussion boards for The Wild Rose Press, Soul
Mate Authors, Sisterhood of Crime, Sisters in Crime, and Guppies. I’m also
active on social media, especially Twitter.
#4 – What is next for
your writing?
On
the back burner, I have four books in different stages of completion, and ideas
are percolating for at least three more. My goal – To release one book each
year. For how long? As long as I continue to be inspired. Should that well dry
up, I will search for something else that could bring joy and fulfillment in my
autumn years.
#5 – Do you have an
addiction to reading as well as writing? If so, what are you currently reading?
I
read voraciously, often finishing two to three books a book. I have eclectic
tastes and love to curl up with contemporary women’s literature, historical
fiction, cozy mysteries, memoirs, psychological thrillers and self-help books.
I enjoy reading Louise Penny, Ann Patchett, Maeve Binchy, Julia Cameron, Anna
Quindlen and Adriana Trigiani.
I
am reading and highly recommend After
Anna by Lisa Scottoline.

In 2008, Joanne Guidoccio retired from a 31-year teaching career and launched a second act that tapped into her creative side. Slowly, a writing practice emerged. Her articles and book reviews were published in newspapers, magazines, and online. When she tried her hand at fiction, she made reinvention a recurring theme in her novels and short stories.
