Interview
with Tony Faggioli
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Another One?
The story revolves around three
main characters: Detective Evan Parker, Father Bernardino Soltera and Hector
Villarosa, a gangster in East Los Angeles.
Parker is actually a carryover from
my first book trilogy (One In A Million, A Million to One and One Plus). In
that trilogy, he had a supporting role that just grew and grew. By the end of
it, several of my readers were writing me wanting to know what happened to him
next. A vet of the Afghanistan War, he’s left his Army Ranger days behind him,
but not the battles he fought nor the toll they took. Suffering from PTSD, he’s
now dealing with the fallout from the first trilogy while keeping his illness
secret from the L.A.P.D.
Father Soltera, meanwhile, is an
aging priest fighting cancer and a dark, inner, secret that has him questioning
his faith when he most needs it. As he tries to lead his church in East L.A.,
he finds himself caught in the middle of a domestic dispute between one of his parishioners,
sixteen-year-old Luisa Martinez, who is pregnant, and her ruthless boyfriend,
Felix, who is trying to force her to get an abortion through threats and
intimidation.
As for Hector Villarosa? He’s a
gang leader, just released from prison, who is about to discover that he’s
losing face on the street because his girl, Marisol, has taken up with another
man. The fact that her lover is not gang affiliated and is working his way
through college makes it even worse, making Hector question the decisions he’s
made in his life from front to back. Haunted by the memory of an evil creature
that helped him survive his time in jail, Hector is now about to discover that
this same creature has followed him home…and now wants to help him deal with
his “Marisol Problem”.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have
planned for the future?
Another One is Book 1 of The Parker
Trilogy. On June 17th, Book 2, One Way or Another will release. I
have currently outlined Book 3, One Gray Day, and will be getting to work on it
soon. After that? Who knows. I like leaving my creative options open.
How
long would you say it takes you to write a book?
I tend to be pretty regimented: 3k words a
day, 3-4 days a week. So, since most of my novels come in at 90k words, it
takes me about 3 months to crank out a first draft.
What
is your favorite childhood book?
I have to pick one? No fair! Hmmmm. I’m
going to go with “childhood” and pick A Wrinkle in Time. If we’re going to aim
for a little older? To Kill A Mockingbird.
If
you could spend the day with one of the characters from Another One, who would
it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would
go and what you would do.
Probably Father Soltera. Because I grew up
with a few guys like Felix, so I mostly know how they think, and Parker’s situation,
though deep and grim, is pretty straightforward. Father Soltera, on the other
hand, has so much going on that I would find it fascinating to go to East L.A.,
meet him at Mom’s Tamales on Pasadena Avenue, have lunch and just chat. I mean,
he’s really getting hit on all sides: emotionally, mentally, physically and
spiritually. He’s in crisis on so many levels and trying so hard to frame it
all within the context of the God he believes in, that it’s a trip.
What
was the hardest scene in Another One to write?
There’s a scene in the novel where Parker
realizes that, mentally, he has a problem and it’s not getting better. I didn’t
want to be cliché with the topic of PTSD nor insincere by either over or
underwriting the scene. So, I did a lot of research, did a few interviews and
watched a lot of videos of soldiers suffering from it. Interestingly enough? It
was the wives of the soldiers…what
they said…that gave me the best 3-D look at the disorder.
What
made you want to become a writer?
I love telling stories for some reason. In
person, at a party or what not, I have a hard time talking about my writing. I
get very shy (and I am not a shy person). In my writing, I can share with
someone and connect with them in a very real and open way. When someone writes
me an email to share with me how the story reached/touched/affected them? It
makes my day.
