Interview with Brooke
Stanton
Can you tell us a little bit about
the characters in Ruby’s Passion?
The title character, Ruby Lucas, is from
an innocent era (1905, Oklahoma), where girls were meant to grow into women by
eighteen, get married, and have children. At the start of the book, this is
exactly where Ruby is in her life. She’s eighteen and just married the only man
she’s ever known or loved, her family friend, James. But on her wedding night
she discovers a shocking secret about James and she’s faced with some hard
truths, fast. Even though she’s meant to be a woman, Ruby still thinks and acts
(and dresses) like a child. But as her journey continues she realizes if she
wants to save her marriage, she has to grow up.
Can you tell us a little bit about
your next books or what you have planned for the future?
I’m currently working on the third book
in the Forbidden Romance series, Lucy’s Awakening (Ruby’s Passion
is book 2 in the series). It follows Lucy and Will Arlington who married for
all the wrong reason. Lucy needed to secure a future for her little sister and
her and Will felt responsible for Lucy’ dire situation and married her out of
obligation. They’ve been married ten years, and they sleep in different rooms
and lead separate lives. Until one day Lucy witnesses something that changes
everything, and she fears her darkest secret may come to light. Because she's
done the one thing that was forbidden from the moments she said yes. She fell
in love with her husband.
How long would you say it takes you to write a
book?
Two-three months. The process has certainly become
faster with each book I write.
What is your favorite childhood book?
The Handmaid’s Tale (I’m thrilled they
made it into a series!)
If you could spend the day with one of the
characters from Ruby’s Passion who would it be? Please tell us why you
chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.
What a fun question! I’d love to spend the day with
James’s mother, Sarah. I’d love to walk the halls of her Manhattan townhouse
and then wander the streets of old New York. I’d ask her about her life growing
up poor in Oklahoma versus being rich in New York City.
What was the hardest scene from Ruby’s Passion
to write?
The sex scenes are fun but challenging to write. Each
one is a story within a story, revealing where the characters are on their
journey, both separately and together.
What made you want to become a writer?
I was always keeping a journal and making up stories
in my head from a young age. I had spiral notebooks filled with stories and
novellas. Sometimes they were silly fantasies about my childhood crushes and
sometimes they were total fantasies. And I loved to read. I still love reading!
