The night of Christmas Eve changes everything for Rhema Clark, a 36-year-old housewife living on quiet Sugar Lane. One day she is hosting a birthday party for her 9-year-old son, Julian, the next she is watching her neighborhood become the backdrop for the perfect murder.

To gain power, Rhema inserts herself into the lives of the residents of Sugar Lane. She knows they have secrets, but none of them run deeper than her own. On the outside she is a kind and caring neighbor, but on the inside, something sinister lurks beneath. The media storm surrounding this murder could destroy her secret life and expose her for what she is.

But will her lust for power override her desire to keep her secrets?

Interview with Harlow Hayes

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in the Sugar Lane Series?

The characters in Sugar Lane are crazy because they orchestrate chaos. Rhema the main character is a narcissist and a social path that inserts herself into the lives of others, and when she does pandemonium ensues. Elsea, her latest victim, is quiet and naïve but Rhema’s presence drives her to do things she has never done before. In this story the characters are over the top which helps to bring some comical relief to offset the darkness of the story. But I think what makes the characters really interesting is that even with all of their craziness I think that readers will be able to relate to them as well since the characters do live ordinary lives in a way. The whole point of this story was to explore the darkness of human nature and how it can be hidden anywhere, in any person. It will leave you questioning “How well do I really know the people around me?”

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

The first three installments of Sugar Lane are finished but I hope to add at least three more installments within the year. I am also starting my research for a gangster romance series called Lover 1509. I hope to have the it published at the end of 2019.

How long would you say it takes you to write a book?

It depends. My debut novel  27 Revelations took me two years because I was in graduate school and working full time so the writing took a back seat to everything else. Sugar Lane however, only took a month or so because it is a short work.

What is your favorite childhood book?

I have so many but I would have to say number one would be Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Sugar Lane who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

I honestly don’t think I would be interested in spending a day with any character simply because they are just too crazy for me. If I had to pick it would probably be Elsea because her kind of crazy is more rational versus Rhema’s kind of crazy which is completely irrational. I imagine a day with Elsea would consist of a lot of whiskey and time dedicated to plotting revenge.

What was the hardest scene from Sugar Lane to write?

I wouldn’t say that there was one in particular but the scenes with Elsea were heartbreaking to construct because Elsea is a victim of a lot of abuse physically, mentally and emotionally. In my mind Elsea represents a lot of people who suffer at the hands of others so she carries a deep sadness.

What made you want to become a writer?

I love to create, and I love stories so it only seemed right to be an author.

Just for fun
