Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: Metal Mouth by Jaimie Engle @theWRITEengle @RABTBookTours
YA Magical Realism
Date Published: 12/1/2018
Publisher: JME Books
Mahlorie hates her braces. And who cares what she looks like anyway? Her parents sure do. Dad, a traveling magician, and Mom, a famous erotica author, constantly harp on the importance of appearance. Her best friend Shai is the epitome of pop-culture, crushing on every boy with a cute smile. But when Mal has a near-death experience and can suddenly hear a boy’s voice in her head, life takes a turn for the weird. He can hear her too. How did her braces become transmitters? And who is this boy she just might be falling in love with? For fans of “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Everything, Everything.”
This magical coming-of-age tale of mystery and self-discovery, and love and friendship makes the impossible become all too real...
Interview with Jaimie Engle
Can you tell us a little bit about the
characters in "Metal Mouth"?
Mahlorie is an insecure
tomboy who bases her opinions off whatever isn't popular. She doesn't get pop
culture or boys or social media, and has trouble finding her place. Her best
friend, Shai, is the opposite: beautiful, popular, and boy crazy. Dyson shows
up, literally, inside Mal's head and he forces her to face all her prejudices
about those around her and learn that she isn't ant-, she's really just afraid.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next
books or what you have planned for the future?
My next book called
"Grey Ghost" is about a boy whose family moves to St. Augustine to
open a bed and breakfast, only the house isn't vacant. A ghost dog haunts it,
and this boy is pulled into a mystery to expose the true actions of a
world-renowned veterinarian who used to live in that very house.
How long would you say it takes you to write a
book?
I write 1,000 words a
day, 5 days a week, so my goal is to write the first draft in 3 months, simmer
it for 3 months, edit if for 3 months, and publish it within a year, on either
June 1 or Dec 1, which are my publication dates annually. I'm always in the
middle of writing, editing, publishing and selling a different book so I can
provide new stories for my readers.
What is your favorite childhood book?
Alice in Wonderland. It
inspired me to be a writer.
If you could spend the day with one of the
characters from "Metal Mouth" who would it be? Please tell us why you
chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.
Dyson. He's the perfect
guy I would have dated in high school. He's funny, fun, down-to-earth, smart,
and gorgeous. We'd go to a coffee shop, talk, listen to live music, and laugh a
lot.
What was the hardest scene from "Metal
Mouth" to write?
The final one, and I
won't say anything more about it. You'll have to just read it to understand
why.
What made you want to become a writer?
When I was seven reading
Alice in Wonderland, there was a moment when I was so engrossed in the story
that I left my bedroom and fell into the book. I gasped and was transported
back into my bedroom. It was the most incredible experience I'd ever felt, and
I wanted to do that for others, to create fantastical worlds that they could
escape to, if only for a moment.
Just for fun
