Interview with Paul Christopher Dumont
As a writer, what
would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
I would choose a tiger. They represent willpower, courage,
and personnel strength, all 3 qualities which I needed to draw upon when
writing the book. I relate to tigers and had a dog named Tiger when growing up.
How many hours a day
do you put into your writing?
I have a full-time job that’s highly demanding so trying to
find the time can be a challenge. I would say during the week two hours a day,
then eight on Saturday’s, and three to four on Sunday’s, which I reserve mostly
for idea-generating for the week and editing.
Do you read your book
reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?
I read every review because I enjoy the feedback. I want to
get better as a writer and an honest review is the best way to do that. As for
future writing, I don’t see reviews influencing me because the joy in writing,
at least for me, comes from writing what I want to write and from not what
someone else wants me to write.
Do you leave hidden
messages in your books that only a few people will find?
They’re not necessarily hidden but family and friends will
be able to relate to my personal stories more.
Can you tell us a
little bit about the characters in Kicking Financial Ass?
Kicking Financial Ass is written in the first person and as
such doesn’t have characters (unless you include me).
Can you tell us a
little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Sure. Right now I have two more books that I’d like to
write; one on how to make money in real estate, and another for my fans that
want to take their investments to the next level.
Do you allow yourself
a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?
I set a timer and try to write as much as I can during that
period of time. My goal is to first put words to the page. Some days I can
write thousands of words while others a few pages. Once the ideas are there I
can edit and massage them into something others will enjoy.
Do you have a certain
number of words or pages you write per day?
I don’t. I find having a word or page goal can be
discouraging when the words don’t come and I believe this is one of the causes
of writer's block. I find it more productive to write as much as I can during a
specific window of time and then stop when the time is up.
What inspires you to
write?
I love to teach and giving back to others. If even one
person finds my book valuable then it was worth writing.
Would you rather:
Read fiction or
non-fiction?
I prefer non-fiction only because I love learning and
there’s so much to learn about the world.
Read series or
stand-alone?
Something is to be said about having a beginning, middle,
and an end in one book and I prefer this for non-fiction. But for fiction, I
prefer a series because once I get hooked it’s hard to let go of the
characters.
Read Science fiction
or horror?
Science fiction! I have an inner-nerd growing up on Star
Trek and Star Wars.
Read Stephen King or
Dean Koontz?
Stephen King for sure. He’s one of the best for a reason.
Read the book or
watch the movie?
I prefer reading the book and then watching the movie.
Otherwise, if I watch the movie first I feel like I’m replaying the movie as
I’m reading the book. Plus the books are often more enjoyable.
Read an ebook or
paperback?
ebooks are more convenient but I prefer paperbacks. I love
the feeling and smell of a book, and I find it’s easier to reference back to a
section I want to reread. I also like storing them on my bookshelf, reminding
myself of key lessons whenever I see a book sticking out. Not to mention I can
lend out a paperback to family or friends.
Be trapped alone for one month in a library with no computer
or a room with a computer and Wi-Fi only?
I’d prefer a computer and Wi-Fi. Most of the books and
materials would be available, in addition to other resources that may or may
not be available in the library.
Do a cross-country
book store tour or blog tour online?
Because of my job, I prefer an online book tour but I’d love
to meet my fans in person if they’re ever in Calgary!
