Stop feeling invisible and start attracting the attention you deserve.

Have you been writing for years, but feel like no one notices? Have you published your stories, only to gain a handful of readers? Do your marketing efforts feel like shouting into a void?

Veteran writer and motivational coach Colleen M. Story helps you break the spell of invisibility to reveal the author platform that will finally draw readers your way.

There are more books out there than ever before, and readers have many other things vying for their attention. A writer can feel like a needle in a haystack, and throwing money at the problem rarely helps. What does work is creating a platform that stands out, but in a sea of a million platforms, how is one to do that?

Writer Get Noticed! takes a new approach, dispelling the notion that fixing your writing flaws and expanding your social media reach will get you the readers you deserve. Instead, discover a myriad of strengths you didn’t know you had, then use them to find your author theme, power up your platform, and create a new author business blueprint, all while gaining insight into what sets you apart as a writer and creative artist.

Writers need readers to achieve their highest potential. Find your way to stand out, and let it lead you to the writing career that fulfills all your expectations and more.

In this motivational and inspiring book, you’ll learn:

  • Why improving your writing skills isn’t enough.
  • Why it’s critical you discover your strengths...and how to do so.
  • What’s stopping you from finding the readers who love your work.
  • What you really want from writing and why that matters.
  • Easy methods to help you build a more successful author platform.
  • What truly motivates you and how to use that to succeed.
  • The author theme that unites your creative work and fits your style.
  • How imposter syndrome can stall your progress, and how to overcome it.
  • How to make better decisions about your writing career as a whole.

When you find the treasure that’s been inside you all along, don’t be surprised if it opens new doors you never thought possible.

Interview with Colleen M. Story

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

I grew up on a ranch and I love animals, so it would be difficult to choose just one. Where I live, I often have run-ins with wildlife, and I do think it’s fun to look up their “meanings” as spirit animals, as I can often glean some insight from them.

Recently, for example, I had an antelope show up in my back yard! We both stared at one another for quite awhile before she meandered off. I later discovered that the antelope is a sign for trusting your instincts and taking action, which was helpful to me at the time.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?

I am a full-time freelance writer, so I write all day for my “day job,” then I usually work on my book writing in the mornings and evenings, as well as on weekends. Suffice to say that I’m at the computer quite a bit!

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?

One of my goals in writing my nonfiction books is to help other writers to reach their goals, so when I read a positive review, it helps me feel that I’m on the right track and that what I’m doing is worthwhile.

As for affecting what I write in the future—yes, the comments I’ve received from writers reading my nonfiction books has encouraged me to write more of them. In my fiction writing, though, I tend to write where my imagination takes me, regardless of reviews.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I’m working in a new novel now entitled “The Beached Ones,” and I also have another nonfiction book in the beginning stages. This one will most likely be focused on helping writers and other creative individuals to finish the projects they start.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?

My writing tends to go in cycles. When I’m working on a first draft of a novel, I do try to reach a certain word count each day. If the flow is going well, I’ll keep writing past that point, but if not, it gives me a stopping place. When writing nonfiction, I try to finish a chapter a day.

Once the book is drafted, I move into the editing stage, and then I simply edit one chapter (or couple of scenes) per day.

What inspires you to write?

With fiction, inspiration comes from the desire to explore some of the deeper questions in life, such as “What happens to a loved one after they die?” or “How can we deal with traumatic losses in our lives?”

For nonfiction, my desire is to give people the information and tools they need to succeed, and to feel on purpose and empowered doing so.

Would you rather

Read fiction or non-fiction?
I regularly read and enjoy both. I read fiction for enjoyment, depth, and regular exposure to truly masterful writing, and I turn to nonfiction for more practical education and learning.

Read series or stand-alone?
I have read and enjoyed some series, but I think as a whole I prefer standalone books. Once I’ve read one, I’m ready for a “new” experience and like to branch out.

Read Science fiction or horror?
I’m a fan of science fiction, but horror keeps me up at night! Plus once an image is in my mind I have a hard time erasing it, so I typically avoid horror.

Read the book or watch the movie?
I enjoy both books and movies. Many like to argue that the “book is better than the movie,” but I’ve enjoyed seeing the movie rendition of books I’ve read simply for the new point of view they offer. Plus it’s educational to see how the screenwriters condense a novel down to 2 hours.

Read an ebook or paperback?
I prefer paperback for fiction and ebooks for nonfiction, though I have a select few nonfiction books that I keep in paperback for re-reading purposes.

Be trapped alone for one month in a library with no computer or a room with a computer and Wi-Fi only?
Definitely the library. It would contain more old books that would be fun to peruse, and I love finding the hidden nooks and crannies where you can hide out and read in a library!

Do a cross-country book store tour or blog tour online?
I have done several blog tours, and I’m always grateful to the hosts! I have not yet done a cross-country bookstore tour, but I think it would be fun.
