After her estranged brother suddenly dies, a girl embarks on a road trip to rediscover who her brother really was in Vicky Skinner’s contemporary YA novel, We Are the Ghosts.

When Ellie’s estranged brother, Luke, dies in a car accident, she’s not sure whether to be devastated that she lost the person who was once her best friend or enraged, still, that he left without a word a year ago. Now, the only people who seem to understand what she’s going through are Luke’s best friend and his ex-girlfriend, who she bonds with over their desire to figure out where Luke went when he walked out of their lives.

As she gets closer to them, and closer to Cade, a boy who seems determined to get to know her better, she realizes that she’s not the only one with reasons to be angry at Luke. And when Ellie makes a discovery that changes everything, she and her new friends hit the road, hoping that following Luke’s trail will bring them answers about the life Luke was living away from them.

Interview with Vicky Skinner

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
Not so much a what as a who. I have a Wonder Woman action figure on my desk, so I choose her. All the way.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?
Depends on how fuzzy my brain is early in the morning, but usually between 6 and 8.

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?
Ha! I feel like I’m going to be in trouble for this but yes, I read my reviews even when I’m told not to. Most of the time, no, they don’t affect what I write, unless something is problematic, and then, let’s talk.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?
Oh, yes. I try to slip in little references to things that I’m into when I’m working on a story. The book I just finished has a bunch of characters named after Avengers because I was editing it when Endgame was released.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in We Are the Ghosts?
There are 4 main characters in We Are The Ghosts: Ellie, Cade, Wes, and Gwen, and they are all very vulnerable, very conflicted characters. Ellie is kind of angry and emotional (so, a lot like me) but still very loving, Cade is gentle and understanding, Gwen is bold and tender-hearted, and Wes is cautious and loyal.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Not a whole lot. I have a book coming out in 2020, so there’s that, and I have just so many things in the works, but I can’t even say what’s going to take and what’s not, so it’s a guessing game right now.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?
I give myself a certain number of hours in the morning. I usually quit between 2 and 3 in the afternoon, and even if the words are flowing, I make myself stop or I could write all day.

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?
Usually, yes, but it varies. When I get edits from my editor, I parcel out a certain number of pages I have to edit a day in order to meet my deadline, but if I’m working on something new, I usually give myself a rough deadline and work by wordcount per day.

What inspires you to write?
I spent a lot of time feeling like I didn’t have anything useful to say. I grew up feeling invisible. Now I feel like I have a voice and a lot of things to say, and that’s what inspires me to write. Also, just seeing the things out there that are being put out by incredible creators (music, movies, tv shows, books, podcasts, everything…) really inspires me to do my best work.

Author Bio:

Born and raised in Texas, I don’t act like much of a Texan. I like cold weather and hate country music. I have a gorgeous husband, two dogs, and a Literature degree from the University of Texas at Dallas. If I’m not at home reading a book or doing laundry, I’m probably at the bookstore, nannying three rambunctious boys, or stuck on the side of the road with car trouble. I’m a reader, a writer, and a bit of a crazy person.
