Published by: Feiwel & Friends
Publication date: May 18th 2021
Genres: Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Young Adult

In Miel Moreland’s heartfelt young adult debut, It Goes Like This, four queer teens realize that sometimes you have to risk hitting repeat on heartbreak.

Eva, Celeste, Gina, and Steph used to think their friendship was unbreakable. After all, they’ve been though a lot together, including the astronomical rise of Moonlight Overthrow, the world-famous queer pop band they formed in middle school, never expecting to headline anything bigger than the county fair.

But after a sudden falling out leads to the dissolution of the teens’ band, their friendship, and Eva and Celeste’s starry-eyed romance, nothing is the same. Gina and Celeste step further into the spotlight, Steph disappears completely, and Eva, heartbroken, takes refuge as a songwriter and secret online fangirl…of her own band. That is, until a storm devastates their hometown, bringing the four ex-best-friends back together. As they prepare for one last show, they’ll discover whether growing up always means growing apart.

Interview with Miel Moreland

What made you want to become a writer?

I’ve wanted to write for almost as far back as memory goes, so it feels like something that is simply essential to me, part of my nature. I love thinking about characters, and it’s incredible when you can share those characters, so suddenly something that was only in your head is now in conversation with real people. You can make people care about moments that only existed in your mind before!

What inspired you to write IT GOES LIKE THIS?

I knew wanted to write about a band, broken friendships, ambition, and sapphic romance. I wrote a few different short stories that separated these, until I found out how I could put them all together. Just like Moonlight Overthrow: a four-part harmony.

Can you tell us a little bit about your main characters?

Eva is a student, songwriter… and still not over her first love. She’s creative and loyal, but she doesn’t always understand the ways others’ outside obligations or identities affect their decisions. Celeste is my solo singer supreme, selling out shows… and still thinking about her first love. Gina is a planner, an ambitious fashionista who turned to acting after Moonlight Overthrow. But her new plans may not have accounted for all of her desires. Steph is the only one who completely left the entertainment industry after the band’s breakup. They’re driven by their deep feelings of love and responsibility toward their family.

Who is your favorite author and why?

This is such a hard question (said every author ever)! There are so many contemporary authors whose books I adore and whose work inspires me, but Jane Austen has had the longest, largest individual impact on me. Her novels are funny, observant, and deeply romantic. Persuasion is explicitly referenced in It Goes Like This, but there’s also a wink to Austen herself in a very early chapter.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I feel like I’ll jinx things if I talk too much about future books, but there are a lot more queer kids with big dreams in the pipeline! For the one that’s coming next, though, think high school, not Hollywood.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

The whole novel was such a joy to write. It was the little things, like the music industry references, and the big things, with characters strengthening their sense of self. The first draft was love-at-first-word, and the process was very intuitive. It felt like I’d been writing my way toward this book for my whole life, so now that I was finally here, I was working on instinct.
