Interview with Constance Mecarello-Gerson
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
One day I was in a writing workshop daydreaming and Snowball the Rabbit took over my sheets of writing paper and arrived!
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
I wanted to create a fun mystery for little children to enjoy reading. I think it is successful and has lovely pictures for children to enjoy.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
Oh, I never worked with an illustrator before. That was interesting. The hardest part in the writing was holding to the correct number of words and not writing too much or not enough.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I love Snowball and like the fact that the Sherlock Rabbit has a strong rabbit personality.
Where there alternate endings you considered?
I did consider not having Slimey be a bad rabbit, but once I started writing him, and the fact that he loved Sunny it seemed to all fit together.
Can you share some stories about people you met while researching this book?
Well, my illustrator Lucia Benito is wonderful. We only communicate online, but I never worked with an illustrator before, and she had a great understanding of what I wanted for the Rabbits.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
Mostly mysteries Elizabeth George, Louise Penny are two of my favorites.
