Half Faerie
Daughter of Light Trilogy # 1
By- Heidi Garrett
Genre- YA Fantasy/Faerie Tales

She doesn't believe in love, and she doesn't believe in herself.

The crucible of her parents' dark ambitions will forge her destiny.

Her consciousness will be transformed.

The journey will be epic.

Melia is an eighteen-year-old half faerie, half-mortal who longs to fly like the full-blood faeries. She also yearns for a life that's truly her own, which might prove more difficult than sprouting wings. Her faerie mother practices black magic, and her mortal father plots to bring war to the enchanted world. No matter how she tries to escape their long shadow, Melia is unable to distance herself from her parents' obsessions.

After the half-faerie is accused of being her father's spy, her friend advises a trip to the Illustrator. The mysterious woman marks Melia's forehead with a strange emblem. She claims it will draw a young priest from distant lands who will come to the half-faerie's aid. Spooked rather than comforted, Melia dismisses the woman's words. Rather, she travels to the mortal world to confront her father.

Whimsical and edgy, Daughter of Light is a spinoff of the 14th century French fairy tale "Melusine." A high fantasy with fairy tale elements and an intriguing cosmology, it's a great choice for readers who have loved Lord of the Rings.

Author Interview-

What inspired you to write Daughter of Light?

My relationship with my maternal grandmother was very transformative. When she died in 2006, I needed to pass something of what she gave me into the world. I was with her, when she took her last breath, and it was such a powerful moment. Her nickname was Elva, and she had an impish, enchanted quality about her. Even as an adult, whenever I was with her, it felt like magic was possible. Although I’ve always been a writer, I’d never attempted anything epic. But I was a huge fan of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Ring trilogy. We’ve been watching the movies every year at Christmas, since the first one was released. (I read Tolkien’s books as an adolescent.) I thought it would be awesome to write something fantastical that revolved around a hierarchy of queens and princesses.
When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Although I’ve always been a writer, I settled into wanting to be an author late in life. I was about 46
when it gelled.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

The first book I remember reading by myself is Go Dog Go by P.D. Eastman. I felt ecstatic as I turned each page. Maybe I was 5? I’m not sure.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Fairy tales, fantasy, gothic, and magical realism.

What is your favorite book?

Ouch. That’s such a tough question. I love Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and The Story Sisters by Alice Hoffman. Little, Big by John Crowley is another favorite.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite
author and why?

I might have to settle on Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which is hugely ironic as his writing, well, let’s just see he wasn’t an emancipated male when it comes to gender relations. But his insight into humanity is simply wicked. The good and the bad, the sacred and the profane, he captures the heights and depths of the human experience within his stories. Reading his words can make dizzy. Serious book orgasms.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time.
Where would you go and why?

The last time I saw my mother, I was five—that’s a long story of divorce court before joint custody existed—but I tried to reconnect with her in August of 1985. She had died about eight months earlier. I would go back to 1984, when she was still alive, and tell her I loved her.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is
it a difficult task?

It’s variable. There are moments when it flows, and other times, when it seems like every word is a challenge.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Two cats. They are indeed my furry loves.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Mmmm. Bacon. Crab. Butter. Ribeyes. Grilled Burgers. Coffee with heavy whipping cream.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Fuel your passion for story, by reading and writing as much as possible. Movies and TV shows work too.
