VBT + #Giveaway: The General's Wife by Sara R. Turnquist @sarat1701 @GoddessFish

The General's Wife
by Sara R. Turnquist
GENRE: Historical Romance

BLURB:

“Go home!” Ismene is speechless as she reads those words written in blood on the walls of her new home. The young, raven-haired Grecian beauty had traveled all the way from her homeland to marry the Pharaoh’s top general. But she never expected this. The hatred of the Alexandrian mob for their Greek rulers is right in front of her. It is the first of many threats she will receive.

Things are escalating out of control. Damaged crops and horses turned loose at night are one thing. But when Ismene receives a death threat, it becomes clear that there is a spy within her own household. She would turn to her husband to deal with this issue, except he left for battle by order of the Pharaoh. Not knowing whom to trust, she fears for her safety as well as the entire ruling class of Egypt.

Excerpt:

Once they were alone, he gathered Ismene into his arms. “Love, are you truly all right?”

“I am.” She sighed, closing her eyes and just breathing in the scent of him. “Now.”

He kissed the top of her head and rubbed her back. When he closed his eyes he could still see the scene that he had come upon when he had found her on the balcony, and his blood ran hot. He forced his mind back to the present.

“I have a surprise for you.”

“Truly?”

“I thought I might read to you.”

“Oh?” She pulled back to look into his face. “That is a pleasant surprise. I think, sir, that you have found my weakness.”

“I think you know mine too, milady.” He said, drawing her in for an intimate kiss.

An Interview with Sara R. Turnquist

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Cold Stone Creamery’s Birthday Cake Remix. Love that stuff!

Which mythological creature are you most like?

Pegasus. Because I’m unique, I soar higher that others, sometimes I take a few low dips from those heights, and while I aim for the moon…I know if I don’t reach it, I’ll land among the stars

First book you remember making an indelible impression on you.

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House…” Series

How do you develop your plot and characters?

I am a “pantser”, which basically means I don’t do a lot of outlining or plotting. I write “by the seat of my pants” and let it unfold as I write. I have a vague sense of a beginning and plot before I get started. Then, with my characters established, they seem to take the story away. I write until I come to a place that needs research. Then I research which inspires me to write more, then I write until I come to another place that needs more research… Sometimes characters do things I don’t anticipate. I know it sounds weird to non-writers, but it’s true. Once you have established their character, they do what they will do, I can’t make an introvert, for example, be the life of a party. They will do what I’ve set in motion for them to do in a given scene or situation.

Describe your writing space.

I write in different spaces. My “working” space is a u-shaped dark colored desk with plenty of space to spread out my research and notebooks (although now I mostly keep all that in Scrivener). I have all the tools I need handy (printer, stapler, pens, etc.). I have boards with pins on them so I can pin up character or plot notes as needed, though because I’m a pantser, I mostly have a running timeline of where my different manuscripts are (with a beta reader, in development, with an editor, etc.). But I cannot write in a cluttered mess. A cluttered area for me equals a cluttered mind.

Who are your favorite romantic couple and why?

Thanks for hosting!

Mai T, my favorite romantic couple would have to be, if I'm not being too bold, the couple from my book coming in October, "Hope in Cripple Creek". They face so many obstacles...and their story is one of overcoming. And there is this heat between them. If you are asking about one I haven't written (which tend to be my favorite as I got to write what I imagined)...then I would pick one of Melanie Dickerson's fairy tales come to life. She takes the classic fairy tales (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, etc.) and sets them in a real time and place and then writes them as if they actually happened. They're so well done.
