When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I’m pretty sure it was in the first
grade. I remember my teacher writing on my report card a note to my mother
saying that I was a future writer in the making.
What is the earliest age you remember reading your first
book?
I was a prolific reader and began
reading books at four. However, I remember my first real adult book, which I
read at the age of eight or nine. The Life of Luther Burbank (LOL), Luther was
a botanist and horticulturist that developed more than 800 types of plants. I
have no recollection of why I read about good old Luther, however, for some
reason that book has never left my memory.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
I have always been a
voracious reader. I’ve gone through periods of passion for many different
genres. I love historical fiction, literary fiction, biographies, fantasy, paranormal,
thrillers, and, of course, my own genre Romance/Suspense. Truthfully, I have no
favorite genre. I’m a book-nymphomaniac. I’ll sleep with any book. It doesn’t
mean I’ll applaud the writing, but luring me into hooking-up with a book isn’t
all that hard.
What is your favorite book?
I can’t do favorites, I have too
many. Gone With the Wind and Atlas Shrugged would have to be at the
top of the list. I’m very big on reading authors from other countries. Nobel
Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz wrote The Cairo Trilogy, a breathtaking story about
a family in Cairo, Egypt. The three books are: Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, and Sugar Street. The books were published in 1956 and 1957. If you’ve
never read them, they are a treasure.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your
favorite author and why?
I love Ernest Hemingway. His ability
to get beneath the skin of his characters, and flesh out their flaws and their
attributes is timeless. His concise, chiseled style of writing appeals to me.
If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place
or time. Where would you go and why?
Paris, the decade before World War
II. A magical place and a magical world of creativity whether it be ballet,
art, music, or literature. Paris was the center of the universe.
When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for
you or is it a difficult task?
Writing is as natural to me as
breathing. Not to say that it doesn’t get hard or frustrating, of course, it
does. When I’m in the writing mode, the hours just slip away.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat?
Or any pets?
I have a Chihuahua named Giorgio
Armani (my daughter named him). We also have a Pitbull, Coco Chanel (my
daughter again), and a Chihuahua mix named Pebbles (yes, same daughter). The
funniest thing is that Giorgio (the smallest dog, about 6 lbs.) is the alpha
dog. He’s the boss of the Pit and any dog that dares to enter his space.
What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to
eat?
I’m a gourmet cook and a very
healthy eater, but my favorite food is, hands down, pizza. On a more gourmet
note, Lobster fra Diavolo, or any seafood (clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops,
etc.) with linguini or spaghetti. Preferably spicy.
Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an
author?
My advice is the advice that was
given to me: Write, write. Write. Find a great editor and learn to enjoy the
editing process. Never publish a poorly edited manuscript. Believe me you’ll
pay if you do. Go to conferences (RWA, etc.). Meeting fellow authors is
inspirational. Get yourself into a critique group. It will force you to write,
force you to edit, and force you to improve your writing.
