Why I Loathe Sterling Lane
by Ingrid Paulson
Publication Date: June 6,
2017
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Per her 537 rules, Harper
Campbell keeps her life tidy—academically and socially. But the moment Sterling
Lane transfers into her tiny boarding school, her twin brother gets swept up in
Sterling’s pranks and schemes and nearly gets expelled. Harper knows it’s
Sterling’s fault, and to protect her brother, she vows to take him down. As she
exposes his endless school violations, he keeps striking back, framing her for
his own infractions. Worst of all, he’s charmed the administration into
thinking he’s harmless, and only Harper sees him for the troublemaker he
absolutely is.
As she breaks rule after
precious rule in her battle of wits against Sterling and tension between them
hits a boiling point, she’s horrified to discover that perhaps the two of them
aren’t so different. And maybe she doesn't entirely hate him after all. Teaming
up with Sterling to save her brother might be the only way to keep from
breaking the most important rule—protecting Cole.

Interview with Ingrid Paulson
What inspired you to write WHY I LOATHE
STERLING LANE?
I’d just finished revising my debut novel, VALKYRIE RISING, and I wanted to
challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone. I decided to write a book from the
perspective of an unreliable and unlikeable narrator to see if I could still
pull readers along. I also wanted to
take the guy character from VALKYRIE and amp him up a bit, take him from
charming teaser into the realm of obnoxious DB.
The goal was to have them be compelling enough to engage readers despite
being a little bit prickly, but to redeem them both by the end. I gave what would become the first to
chapters to my critique group and they encouraged me to keep going.
Can you tell us a little bit about the
next books in WHY I LOATHE STERLING LANE series or what you have planned for
the future?
I’m working on a humorous
contemporary that will be a companion to Sterling Lane, featuring hate to love
and lots of sizzling tension.
Can you tell us a little bit about the
characters in WHY I LOATHE STERLING LANE?
I guess I cannibalized this question with my answer to number 1! Harper is an
uptight, neurotic girl who lives by 537 rules, and they’re often borderline
absurd. For those of you who haven’t read it yet, being inside her head is
intentionally challenging at first. I wanted the ultimate payoff of the book
being to see her change in subtle ways that make her relatable and (I hope)
endearing as she learns to be vulnerable.
Sterling is the guy you hate to
want. He’s insufferable, obnoxious, spoiled, condescending, but with a streak
of loyalty that pulls his character through a bigger transformation than Harper
undergoes. His lines were unbelievably fun to write, I’d basically pause and
think “what is the worst yet hilarious thing someone could say at a moment like
this?”
You know I think we all have a favorite
author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Every time I get a question like this, I try to think of something exotic—an
author that will expand the reader’s repertoire. But if I’m being honest, the Jane Austen was
a huge gateway author for me. I love her subtle humor, the richness of her dialogue,
and for me it was the first time I was pulled in by romance.
If you could time-travel would you
travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you
like to visit this particular time period?
I’d time travel to the future. I’m actually a science-dork by day, writer by
night, so I’m very curious to see where science takes us, particularly with
some of the emerging breakthroughs in medicine.
And technology—self-driving cars are just around the corner. I can’t
wait to see what else comes along.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends?
Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
I wish! I’d love to get a dog. I grew up in a dog-crazy family and we had
multiple pets at any given moment, but my life is too crazy right now to take
care of a dog they way they deserve to be cared for.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy
schedule to visit with us today.
AUTHOR INFO:
Ingrid Paulson does not, in
fact, loathe anyone. Although the snarky sense of humor and verbal barbs in Why
I Loathe Sterling Lane might suggest otherwise (and shock those who think they
know her best).
Ingrid lives in San Francisco
with her husband and children and enjoys long-distance running, eavesdropping,
and watching science documentaries. She has always loved books and writing
short stories, but was surprised one day to discover the story she was working
on wasn’t so short any more. Valkyrie Rising, a paranormal girl power story was
Ingrid’s first novel. Expect another humorous contemporary romance to join the
list soon.
