Interview
with LM Preston
For the
record, please state your name.
LM
Preston
What
inspired you to become a writer?
Writing
filled many empty hours of my day when I was a kid. I stayed home alone most
days since I was a child of a single mom. When I wasn’t reading, I was writing.
What are your hobbies?
I have many hobbies. I love to read,
travel, play cards and board games.
What are you passionate about?
I
am most passionate in encouraging others. It can be because I’m the oldest of
five kids, but I have that nurturing thing going on.
What interests are you into?
I
find that most of my interests are in science, history and mysteries. I tend to
watch documentaries just in the interest of discovery in these areas.
What social media do you use to contact with
your fans? Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
I use mainly facebook and twitter. I
tried Snapchat but enjoy watching stories there more than posting them.
Instagram I haven’t been on in awhile since I enjoy the interactive
communication that facebook and twitter offers.
What is your username on the different social
media platforms? (do you want this information to be publisher
What did you do before you became a published
author?
Even though I am an author of many types and
genre of books, I am still an Engineer, a teacher, a mom, a wife and probably
suffer from some sort of hyperactivity condition since I love to be busy.
Do you have another job other than writing?
Yes,
I am a Database Architect and Engineer.
How long have you been writing for?
I’ve
consistently been writing since I was twelve, then took a break to write more
technical works for my jobs.
What's your writing style like?
It really depends on what I am writing.
For my non-fiction writing, I like to speak plain and simple so people
understand and get the point. In my fiction writing, it really is character
driven.
What's your favorite genre to write/read in
and why?
I enjoy writing young adult urban
fantasy and science fiction. Those genres allow for me to create a world that
is specifically to my creative mood at the moment.
Some writers have something playing in the
background, do you and what?
It depends on what I am writing and what
drives that character forward. I listen to all types of music, so I try to be
open to music that is in tune with the scene and mood of my character.
What's the inspiration behind your books?
My inspiration comes from my kids, my life and
at times, boredom from being at work, at school or trying to relax.
Is there anything you found particularly
challenging about writing?
Hitting and knocking down writer’s block. It
usually happens when I let the characters go wild and the writing flows, then I
get stuck. I have to usually write anyway, even though I know it’s not it’s
best, it’s part of the process.
What advice would you give any newbie author or
anyone that wants to pick up writing?
First of all, write for your own pleasure.
Never stop writing for yourself. Then, consider that the business of writing
for profit, is a business that takes a different skill and knowledge than
writing. Know the business of writing inside and out, of publishing, and know
your audience. Slow and steady wins the race.
If you Don’t mind tell us a little about your
personal life?
I have
four kids, and have been married for over 20 years. I love to travel, but
admit, if it wasn’t for my adventurous husband, I wouldn’t have experienced or
gone to half the places we’ve visited.
