Emory Rome is back in DEATH OPENS A WINDOW, Book 2 of the Mourning Dove Mysteries and the follow-up to the national bestseller MURDER ON THE LAKE OF FIRE.

As he struggles with the consequences of his last case, Emory must unravel the inexplicable death of a federal employee in a Knoxville high-rise. But while the reticent investigator is mired in a deep pool of suspects - from an old mountain witch to the powerful Tennessee Valley Authority - he misses a greater danger creeping from the shadows. The man in the ski mask returns to reveal himself, and the shocking crime of someone close is unearthed.

Interview with Mikel J. Wilson

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Death Opens a Window?

Emory Rome is a disgraced special agent who is now working with his former nemesis, Jeff Woodard, a cocky and rule-resistant private investigator. The two men own Mourning Dove Investigations with Virginia Kennon, who is a former marine and Jeff’s best friend.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I’m currently writing the third Mourning Dove Mysteries novel, which opens with the most impossible murder I’ve ever devised. Hopefully readers will have fun trying to figure out exactly what the hell happened. Once I’m done with that book, I’ll keep writing the series until I’ve completed the eighth and final novel.

How long would you say it takes you to write a book?

Without counting the time I spend to develop the story in my head, I usually write the first draft of a mystery novel in about six months, and I keep revising it for another four to six months until I have the final draft.

What is your favorite childhood book?

I loved The Three Investigators mystery series, which is probably what inspired me to have three investigators in this series.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Death Opens a Window who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

I’d spend the day with Jeff Woodard because he’s an adventurer and a bit of a smart-ass, so he’d keep the adrenaline pumping and the laughs a-coming. Although we might start with a plan for the day, Jeff would drive past the first destination in favor of a better one he had just thought of. I have no clue where the day would end, but midnight would likely be on the other side of at least one quasi-felonious activity, several shots of tequila and unintentional moments of self-revelation.

What was the hardest scene from Death Opens a Window to write?

Any scene involving Mary Belle Hinter was difficult to write because she speaks in a unique Appalachian vernacular. After I finished the first draft, I copied and pasted her scenes together into a separate document so I could read through them all at once to ensure I wrote her dialogue in a consistent manner.

What made you want to become a writer?

I’ve been driven to write since I can remember, so I honestly can’t think of a flashpoint for pursuing this particular career. Even when I was sidetracked with day jobs, I worked toward my dream by writing every day. For years, I was my only reader, and now my file cabinets are full of screenplays, short stories, poems and books that no one else has ever seen.
