“A battered butterfly, he’d build Kimberly up, nurture her strength
and watch her return to flight. He repressed the visions dancing in the
back of his mind; her naked body brandished red flags and spurred him to
stampede. Bulls and butterflies did not mix.”
Jordan Fry’s obsession is born in “You Can’t Force Love” by Marie Drake, Book I in the Locked Hearts Series.
From different towns and social backgrounds, Jordan Fry and Kimberly
Orvine experience life-altering abuse, lose a parent and land in the
same foster home. Angry, and self-deprecating, fiery redheaded Kimberly
is deadset on lousy behavior and suffering the consequences, punishing
herself for former sins. Scared by his inner darkness, pyromaniac Jordan
has vowed to change for the better. He focuses on Kimberly as the key
to his success, but she intends to make him break his promises. Unaware
of Jordan’s atrocious actions in the past, she’s dangerously close to
unleashing the evil he struggles to contain during their epic battle of
wills. Can they both survive?

Paul pounced, shoved him, and his back hit the bed; he concentrated on Paul’s cheek; a river flowed into a cold lake; a twisted scar ended at his icy blue eye. Scared, Jordan couldn’t continue to look at him; he turned his eyes to the water-stained ceiling, and Paul bent close to his ear. “Listen up, you little freak; I know what you did, and hate that your mother worries about ’poor, misunderstood Jordan.’ All you do is give us grief.” He forced Jordan’s head into the mattress. Jordan grappled his faded Mario Brothers comforter when Paul clamped a hand over his mouth and rammed a knuckle into his rib cage. “I should hang a brick from your neck and drop you into the river; maybe I will.” Jordan blinked; he couldn’t move his head.
Paul stood and closed the door on his way out; Jordan waited a few seconds and opened it a crack; he sat against the wall and massaged his bruised ribs. His mother sniffled and sobbed as she and Paul held a whispered conversation, and finally, their voices returned to an audible level.
