Dax, low status and a non-conformist, is stuck in the middle of the unending aliens wars. It's 2187, and Earth has the Katarga trapped on the moon, refusing to allow them to escape. Then there are ongoing threats from the Piltrak and Jurale, which forces Global Command to recruit 15-year-olds like Dax, as soldiers. She never imagined she'd be advanced as a soldier, yet she was hand-picked by gruff Commander Viteri and taken from her parents, never to see them again. She doesn't want to kill aliens, and suspects there's more to the wars than keeping the aliens at bay. The problem is, she has to find a way to stay alive long enough to reveal the truth.

Interview with Sofia Diana Gabel

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

A cat. I relate to cats. Cats are sometimes needy, sometimes not, something happy, and sometimes grumpy. That’s me in a nutshell.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?

Never as many as I’d like. Most of my writing in on the weekends because I have a “day job” which takes up most of my weekday hours. Sadly.

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?

Yes! Of course I do. The great ones certainly boost my fragile self-esteem, while the less great ones make me want to be better. And I do pay attention to what every reviewer says, good or bad.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?

Not often. I did put anagrams in one book though.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in War and Money?

My main character, Dax, is 15 and not satisfied with the status quo. She’s outspoken and doesn’t understand how other kids her age are so accepting of their fate.

Dax makes friends with her squad, including Viga and Kova, girls her age. These girls look up to Dax and become her sidekicks, slowly learning to stand up for themselves.

The antagonist, Commander Viteri, is tough and greedy, only thinking of himself and what he can do to benefit himself.

Jarmer is a boy pilot, a “flyboy” who befriends Dax.

Tablon is a squadron Lead, favored by Commander Viteri, and makes Dax’s life miserable.

Lenora is another antagonist and a Lead. She hates Dax even more than Tablon does.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I’m currently working on War and Disorder, the second book after War and Money. I’m also trying to finish a thriller sci-fi-ish novel. I have quite a few ideas for future novels, so I certainly won’t run out of stories!

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?

I don’t have a set number of hours, or words, to write in a day. I work a “day job” so don’t write much during the week. The weekends are my writing time.

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?

Same answer as Number 7 above. Working during the week really eats into my writing time.

What inspires you to write?

I love every aspect of writing from concept, to writing, to editing, to rewriting. I love stringing words together to make sentences that make stories. It’s my true passion.

I’m a multi-genre fiction writer who was born in Sydney, Australia, but now lives in Central California. With degrees in environmental science and archaeology, I enjoy being out in nature when I’m not glued to my desk writing or researching a new story idea. Writing is a true passion of mine, born from a love of the written word that can transport the reader to different places or worlds and deliver them back to reality, safe and sound.
