EXCERPT:
Nick swatted at a mosquito as he watched Andy approach. From his vantage point on the bending machine he could see she was frowning. "Hey, girl, what's up?"
Andy huffed up to the machine. "Nick," she mumbled in greeting.
"What's wrong?"
Tugging the water bottle from her back pocket, she twisted off the cap. "Nothing."
"Come on, tell me," he encouraged, climbing down to get a better look.
She took a long pull from the bottle, then twisted the cap back on. "Just the usual garbage."
"Like what?"
She pouted, staring down the right-of-way. Finally, she turned back to Nick. "Have you heard any rumors about me?"
His head jerked back. "Rumors? Like what?"
"You know, gossip. Bad things the guys say about me."
He scratched his head, tipping his hard hat to one side. "I don't think so."
She sniffed, her lip curling in dismissal.
Nicks shoulder's slumped and he grimaced. "What did you hear?"
Andy kicked at a dirt clod, sending up a poof of dust.
"Come on," he encouraged. "Tell me."
"Fine," she snapped. "Did you hear that I work nights down at the Blue Moon, as a stripper?" Her hip cocked, as she waited for his response.
"Oh that." He laughed. "Yeah, I heard that."
"Nick!" she exclaimed, tossing her hands in the air. "Don't you think that's something bad?"
"Well," he hedged, his grin fading. "That's just-"
"Why would they say that?" she lamented. "I've been so careful."
He rubbed his chin, his eyes darting from her to the right-of-way and back. "That's just cuz- you're hot," he finally stuttered.
"Unbelievable," she said, waving at the bee hovering around her head.
"Nobody takes that stuff seriously," he offered, his expression hopeful.
Andy turned to continue down the right-of-way. "They better not!" she called over her shoulder.
Nick sighed and adjusted his hard hat.
"What did she want?" one of the nearby hands asked Nick.
The foreman watched the younger man hungrily ogle Andy as she walked away. "None-a-your business," he snapped. "Did you get that pipe stretcher I asked for?"
The worker's face fell. "Pipe stretcher?"
Nick scowled down at him. "I told you to get it an hour ago," he hollered. "They're in the back of my truck. They got green handles on 'em, now go! Go!"
The younger man jumped into action, sprinting down the right-of-way toward Nick's truck.
"Dumbass," Nick muttered under his breath.
"Did you just send him for the pipe stretcher?" another worker asked with a chuckle.
"What's it to you?" Nick grumbled, still off put by Andy's situation.
The hand hunched his shoulders. "Nothing. We all fell for that one when we were green."
"Well, looking for it will keep him busy for a while," Nick huffed, turning to climb back onto the bending machine.

Kirsten is a dreamer with an eye for art and design. She worked in the engineering field, taught college, and consulted free lance. Due to health problems, she retired in 2012 to travel with her husband. They live and work full time in a 40' travel trailer with their little dog Bingo. Besides writing romance novels, she enjoys selling art on Etsy and spoiling their three grandchildren.
As a writer, Kirsten's goal is to create strong female characters who face challenging, painful, and sometimes comical situations. She believes that the best way to deal with struggle, is through friendship and women helping women. She knows good stories are based on interesting and relatable characters.

Interesting premise and I love to read about strong women, so I'll definitely try this one.
