There were plenty of other middle schoolers it could've chosen. Six-hundred and eighty-six, if you didn't count Clifton. The Arrow of Light appeared in his closet then whisked him away to a far-off land, where a dwarf and magical bird led him to two princes. He returned their arrow that he had somehow found and went home to his normal life. But the Arrow of Light had other plans. When Clifton found out that the king locked the princes in Drofflic Tower, he knew he must return to the past to protect the future. Enlisting the help of many mythical creatures and the princes' own sister, he managed to find the reason the Arrow of Light chose him. But magic can be wrong. And history longs to be told.

Interview with Jaimie Engle

For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?
The book was inspired by the story of the two princes locked in the Tower of London by their uncle, King Richard III. This historical tale is fascinating and lends itself to my theme which is “to be the voice for those who can’t” and supports my anti-bullying message.

How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
My son was bullied in first grade. We started homeschooling and attended Archery Club in Wickham Park, which is where I first had the idea of a boy who stumbled across a magic arrow. This led me to research about the princes. I wanted to retell their story with a new ending. Once I tied that in with my own son’s experience of bullying, it all came together!

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
My goal is to get kids to think outside themselves through empathy and find ways to use their own words to solve their problems. By being the voice for someone who can’t I think we can combat bullying and end it. When I have the opportunity to speak with students and hear them tell me that my presentation gave them courage to face their own bully, it shows me that I have accomplished my goal…and that we are all a part of something greater than ourselves, as Clifton learns in the story.

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I hope they keep coming back for more stories, share the ones they have, and remember to live the lessons from the books. I’d also love to get their art and stories for my Fan Art Fridays on social (P.O. Box 411242 Melbourne, FL 32941)

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Leaving this world to enter the world I created. There were no boundaries. I could go anywhere between the bookends, and as the writer, I am my first reader. It’s one of my favorite parts about being an author.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
The next book in the series is in edits, and until COVID-19, was slated for a Halloween release (we shall see…). In book 2, “Clifton Chase on Castle Rock,” Clifton returns to a time when his dwarf friends are teenagers to help Robin Hood on an adventure and save the people of Sherwood Forest. I’m super excited to get this book published!

How long have you been writing?
Since I was seven, after I fell into the pages of “Alice in Wonderland”. Many of my early stories are in my book “The Toilet Papers, Jr.” available on Amazon. It’s a fun collection of short stories and poetry.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in “Clifton Chase and the Arrow of Light”?
Clifton is an ordinary boy who becomes a hero, just like every child reading the book has the potential to become. His friends who he meets on his journey through time and his friends from school are flawed, but faithful, and they show him his way, like any good friend should. The villains are self-absorbed and try to tear down Clifton and his friends, but together they find a way to sacrifice themselves for the good of each other. It’s a feel-good story that is nostalgic, in the same sense as Narnia or Percy Jackson or Harry Potter.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from “Clifton Chase and the Arrow of Light” who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.
I would love to spend the day with Liv the Dwarf. I think she is a fun character, and after writing book two, I learned a lot about her that I didn’t know from book one. We would probably spend a day in her world, and she would show me how she lives in a cottage in the woods in 1485. Plus, maybe a magic trick or two, but I don’t want to give too much away…
