Are you ready?
'My name is Terra Underwood, by the way.'
'I know, thought you should know anyway.'
'I'm Kalem.' A few seconds passed and then, 'Kalem Akuma.'
She couldn't help but think it was rather fitting.
'Well, Underwood means 'wood that is under.' What exactly it's under we'll never know.'
'Is that meant to be a joke?'
'Everything I say is meant as a joke.'
She could almost hear him smile, and that brought her own lips to twist upwards. She closed her eyes, feeling suddenly at ease and comfortable.
'Goodnight, wood that is under.'
'Goodnight, demon.'
My Review:
In the year 2160 the world is divided up into 7 sections or
capitals. It is illegal for humans and cyborgs to have anything to do with each
other in any form or fashion. If any of these laws are broken the punishment is
death.
There is one human Terra Underwood who lives by her own set
of rules and would love to get all the rules changed and to take down the
government. Terra knows if she is caught breaking any of the rules that she
will be punished but that is only if she is caught right?
Terra has this dream every night about a cyborg where she is
trying to save his life but every time she does she dies. She has this same
dream night after night. Terra spends almost every night in the pits fighting
humans and cyborgs alike. Fighting helps Terra to wind down and keep her life
balanced.
The fights are illegal and are kept on the down low but they
are raided from time to time. The raids cause humans and cyborgs to run in all
directions for their lives, ensuring chaos, lives are lost in the chaos. While
fighting in the pits one night Terra sees the boy that is in her dreams standing
outside the ring watching her.
To learn more about this boy and to find out who he is Terra
decides to follow him home one night. This one decision may just change Terra’s
life forever in more ways than one. With the help of her new friends Terra is
making plans and trying to come up with ways to change how the world is ran.
After Darkness is a fast paced book and will stay with me
for many years to come. I love the world that was created for After Darkness
where the world is divided into different capitals. I didn’t like that humans
and cyborgs were prohibited from interacting with each other. I am so glad that
Terra didn’t pay much attention to this law. I really liked Terra because she
didn’t let the laws dictate how she felt or stop her from doing something she
needed to do or wanted to do.
If you are into cyborgs, dystopian worlds with a little
romance thrown in then I highly recommend After Darkness.
