Once The King of Nightmares, Ashe lost everything when he was betrayed. Released from prison, he's got one goal: Stay Free. To make that happen he'll have to rescue the girl who stole his crown while saving the court he'd rather see burn. But he can't do it alone. He needs Callie.
Abused, neglected, and finally shunned by The Court of Light, Callie is done with court politics. It's just too damned bad Ashe doesn't care. He's arrogant, manipulative, and dangerous. Everything she's been taught to fear. It would be so easy to hate him, but the sadness in his gaze calls to her heart, and his touch awakens her own darkness. She has never wanted anyone more.
Callie is Ashe's darkest desire, but to earn his freedom and prevent the destruction of humanity, she must embrace the destiny that will keep them apart. But is the safety of the world worth losing the kind of love he's only dreamed of?
Interview with Rachel Hailey
For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?
I took a lot of inspiration from older Celtic mythology, Irish lore, and fairy tales. I couldn't even tell you what the first book or story I stumbled across was, I've spent a lot of time in the reference section of my library. One of my favorites that I had to buy for my home library was a book of retellings by Bob Curran, THE BLOODY IRISH.
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
Some of my maternal ancestors are Irish immigrants, who as far as I have been able to discern, migrated during the potato famine. My grandmother told me a lot of interesting stories and I just wanted to know more.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
I really just wanted to provide something fun and immersive that allows people to escape for a little while. Yes, there is darkness in my pages, but there is something magical about monsters and their habits.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I really hope you like Ashe and Callie as much as I do and hope you have fun seeing their relationship unfurl.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Shrugging off expectations and getting to be good at being bad.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
I have planned several more books set in the world of the kyn. There's just so much happening! I want to showcase each court and the monsters that live there. The next book picks up six weeks after the events of Ashe's and Callie's story and takes you into The Court of Light. They may have been the villains of Ashe and Callie's story, but in the world of the kyn, there is no black or white, everything is just shades of gray. After that, we're going to visit the dreamkyn and see if their courts can find redemption and love.
How long have you been writing?
Most of my life. I started writing seriously in high school in Drama class where I wrote and performed original monologues then that turned to plays. In college, I continued doing much the same and after I became a mother and needed to take a step back from the stage I found writing as a way to perform.
The first novel I ever wrote was in 2006, but for a long time I simply wrote for me and didn't seek publication for more than a few short stories.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Sleeping With Shadows?
Ashe was once The King of The Wild Hunt. The only child of Sleeping Beauty, he was born with the ability to manipulate dreams and put people to sleep. He's become the bogeyman of not just humanity but of the kyn as well. A fate that has isolated him from everyone but a handful of faithful friends.
Callie is an unwanted daughter, a reminder of her mother's mistakes and she's never been allowed to forget it. As an adult, she flees her mother's court and abuse and carves a life for herself. Decedent of light and dark, her conflicting nature has left her a little wary of kyn and the courts in general. She spends her time working as a liaison between humans and kyn, decorating her house, and going to clubs with her best friend, Char.
If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Sleeping with Shadows who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.
I would absolutely love to go to Club Red with Callie. Getting dressed up, hitting the bar, dancing, trying all the new drinks, it would be an exciting night. Callie is definitely a girl who knows how to let her hair down and have a good time.
