BLOOD MONEY is the true legal thriller of a terrifying David vs. Goliath fight against massive healthcare fraud by a brave Whistleblower. It includes attempted murder, extortion, money-laundering, fraudsters hiding money in the Cayman Islands, gold buried in a storage container in a CEO’s backyard, an Assistant Attorney General sabotaging her state’s case, and a corrupt Governor torpedoing litigation by his own Attorney General. From Silicon Valley to the Sunshine State, in a showdown that reads like a Hollywood movie, Chris Riedel survives to share it all. His actions have resulted in more than $550 million in settlements and a court verdict... and counting.
Interview with Chris Riedel
For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?
Blood Money is filled with information about white collar crime and how the Department of Justice works. Additional resources may be found at www.taf.org (Taxpayers Against Fraud).
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book
While the CEO of Hunter Laboratories, a very good Northern California medical lab, I was forced to either copy illegal taxpayer scams in order for my lab to compete with two industry Goliaths; or close the lab, lay off 150 employees and lose our huge investment in the operation. I chose to fight to stop the illegal frauds with a Whistleblower lawsuit.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
I wanted to expose the massive amount of health care fraud in the U.S. and how ineffective the Department of Justice is in prosecuting those responsible. I believe that, by sharing stories from our experiences, we’ve shown this very well. These include a corrupt Governor torpedoing his own Attorney General, an Assistant State AG destroying her own case, attempted murder, extortion, fraudsters burying gold in a shipping container in their back yard and many other equally unbelievable — but true — situations.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I wrote Blood Money as a true legal thriller. There are some real white-collar villains in the book, including very public names, whose scams will surprise and interest you. Also, this type of medical fraud is continuous, reaching into patient's pockets — and state and federal treasury's tax dollars."
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Telling the story of my fraud-fighting efforts.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
I plan to continue my fraud fighting on behalf of taxpayers. I am currently working on a multi-billion dollar case.
How long have you been writing?
Blood Money has taken three years to complete and bring to market.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Blood Money?
All of the characters are real, and we get into their backgrounds in the book. Among them are state attorneys general and governors, Department of Justice attorneys, medical lab CEOs, two sitting U.S. Senators, the current Democratic vice presidential nominee, Sen. Kamala Harris — and a trio dedicated to fighting medical fraud and preserving taxpayer dollars, that being myself, and attorneys Niall McCarthy and Justin Berger.
If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Blood Money, who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.
Niall McCarthy, my lead attorney, is one of the smartest and most engaging people I have ever met. And he is fun to be around. I would love a long evening sharing stories.
