Interview with John T. Davis

John T. Davis, co-author of Loser’s Gumbo took the stage in this interview. Manning Wolfe, co-author, says ditto to J.T.’s colorful answers!

For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?

J.T.: Once you get a feel for the music and where it’s coming from, you have a better sense of where the characters are rooted.

They might try streaming WWOZ-FM (“The Mighty ‘OZ”!) as a gateway to Louisiana music.

They could start by listening to the wonderful array of music from the region—Bobby Blue Bland (R&B, Houston), Clifton Chenier (zydeco, south Louisiana), the Boogie Kings (swamp pop from the Texas/LA border), Doug Sahm (who was from Austin and San Antonio, but could play any style of roots music you could name), Marcia Ball (heiress to the New Orleans “piano professors”), the Neville Brothers (NOLA music royalty), Delbert McClinton (Texas blue-eyed soul), Dr. John (a walking encyclopedia of New Orleans music and history)…the list is too long to mention!

How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?

J.T.: I am a freelance journalist in Austin who early on developed a fascination with the local music scene here. As I got to know musicians better by writing about them, I had opportunities to go out on the road with some of them, sometimes in the line of duty, sometimes just for fun. Seeing the road from the inside of the bus gave me a lot of inspiration for my band in Loser’s Gumbo, Mack Mouton and the Rumors.

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

J.T.: Kinky Friedman, the musician-turned-mystery-writer, liked to say that his goal as an author was “to entertain Americans in their airports.” That’s pretty much what I aspire to—to entertain you during a long layover or a day at the beach. We ain’t talking Dostoyevsky here…

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

J.T.: Support your local bookstores. Dig into your own regional roots and discover the art, music and literature therein.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

J.T.: The same thing I hope readers enjoy about it—the chance to get out of my head and away from daily cares for a while.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

J.T.: Well, the book is set roughly in the mid-Nineties, so I guess I could bring Mack into the 21st century age of social media (he’d hate it!) and virtual reality…talk about a fish out of water!

How long have you been writing?

J.T.: I began writing for my junior high paper, but I started getting paid money to write after I graduated from the University of Texas in 1977.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Loser’s Gumbo?

J.T.: Mack Mouton leads a semi-successful band in South Louisiana, much as his own father did. Mack thinks it’s kind of a fate deal; he and his daddy had a complicated relationship.

Once the events that set the book in motion have transpired, Mack crosses paths with a mysterious character, Gordo Neville, who seems to have had access to a secret pertaining to Mack’s father.

There is also a favorite character, Mercedes Cavasos, a Tejana lawyer to whom Mack finds himself attracted. She’s pretty, smart, funny and full of moxie, just like all the best Texas women.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Loser’s Gumbo who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

J.T.: To musicians who spend 150-200 nights on stage and just as many days on the road, activities that you and I take for granted seem wildly exotic. It would be fun to follow Mack and Mercedes around on an aimless three-day weekend and let him watch how the “day people” spend their free time.
