Racing to lock down the CDC's deadly virus samples from terrorists, ex-Special Forces medic Henry Lee partners with Ruby Toth on the Outbreak Task Force. But the terrorists always seem one step ahead. As they work side by side, Henry's taken with how Ruby accepts and respects him, instead of pitying him for all he lost overseas, including his leg. Ruby's hiding something, though, and Henry fears she's been leaking sensitive information. Terrorists have kidnapped her brother, and now microbiologist Ruby Toth faces a horrible choice. If she doesn't give them a vial of Small Pox as ransom, her brother will die. She knows her prickly—yet very hot—boss, Henry, could provide the help she needs. But she joined the CDC to root out insiders plotting to unleash a bio-engineered pandemic, and she can't trust anyone. Not even Henry.

Interview with Julie Rowe

For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?

Hell & Back is the 5th book in my Outbreak Task Force series which involves bioterrorism inside the USA. The Task Force is a department of the CDC, so start with the CDC’s website: https://www.cdc.gov/ You might be surprised by what you find on the CDC’s homepage. At the top is a large banner on Covid-19, but below that are four additional banners: Flu vaccines, Hurricanes & tropical storms, Youth & E-Cigarette use, and Wildfire smoke & Covid-19. The CDC responds to more than just disease outbreaks, they also respond to all manner of disasters and emergencies inside the USA and all over the world.

How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?

I’m a medical lab technologist and, at one time, identifying viruses and bacteria was part of my job. I also want to share how first responders of all kinds struggle to live with PTSD.

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

This book is the last book in the series and I wanted to give readers a satisfying love story for Henry and Ruby as well as revisit some of the characters from earlier books. I think I accomplished all that (fingers crossed!).

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Thanks for reading. Thanks for choosing to spend your time reading despite all the other claims on your free time. There is no story without an audience.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Writing the wrap-up about these characters, giving them all their happily-ever-after, is the thing I enjoyed most.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

My next release will be a self-published romantic suspense called Trapped with the Under Cover Prince. Look for it in December, 2020.

I'm also producing my Biological Response Team series into audiobooks. The first book, Deadly Strain, should be available in a couple of months. :-)

How long have you been writing?

It’s been about 20 years since I first started writing. It took me 10 years to sell my first book. 😊 Hell & Back is my 25th title.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Hell & Back

The hero, Henry, is a special forces veteran with degrees in microbiology and virology. He lost a leg in Afghanistan, but that hasn’t slowed him down. He’s gruff and grumpy and lives for his job.

The heroine, Ruby, is a microbiologist. She has a twin brother, Nathan, who’s a bonified genius and parents who work for the NSA. She likes to say that she missed out on the sneaky gene in her family.

Henry loves her courage and intelligence. She doesn't assume things about people she takes the time to get to know them. She's also cute and curvy, with a smile that he's already addicted to seeing.

Ruby loves his intelligence and strength. He's also very protective of her, which drives her just as crazy as it warms her heart.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Hell & Back who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

This is an easy answer: I would spend time with the Drill Sergeant! He’s a cranky, foul-mouthed, sweetheart. He yells a lot, but he’s on the side of the angels. I’d love to watch him run a crop of new recruits until they drop.
