A contemporary, holiday fantasy with a new twist on A Christmas Carol and It’s A Wonderful Life.
Abby Nicholson used to love Christmas. Until she didn’t.
After leaving Winter Glen, the small town famous for its Christmas celebration and her family’s greeting card company, Abby is forced to return to the home she left behind when the unexpected passing of her father thrusts the business into her hands.
Turning her back on the magic of the holiday beloved by her father and the town, she decides to sell the business. Signing the paperwork with the very pen her father used to create it, she is shocked to discover her hometown has become a whole new world.
One where Christmas has vanished!
Now stuck in a place devoid of hope, joy, and the spirit of the season, Abby sees family and friends altered in the most terrible of ways.
Determined to set things right, though unsure how, Abby takes out her father’s pen and begins to draw. When she realizes her art is coming to life, she sets out to recreate the holiday and bring back the most wonderful time of the year.
But some are determined to keep an iron grip on the town and will do anything in their power to stop her.
Interview with Thommy Hutson
For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?
The story is a holiday fantasy about love, family, redemption, and the darkness that can overcome us when we focus only on the things we want, sometimes at the expense of others. There are, of course, so many incredible movies and books that tackle these things, but at the top of my list are A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life. Another idea is looking for things in a new place when they have always been with you or around you. The perfect example of that is, of course, The Wizard of Oz. Movies and books and stories such as these are incredibly inspirational to me.
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. It’s something that brings nothing but fond memories of the past and hopefully excitement for the future. It wasn’t hard for me to want to tackle a story set at this time, but I also wanted to explore the idea that the things we want are not always the things we need. On top of that, what would happen if we actually did get the thing we wanted… especially if we didn’t need it! The story explored that idea and shows how things may change, but not always in the way one hopes if their “wishes” come true.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
Aside from telling a really interesting story, I wanted readers to really feel like they were experience the feeling and true spirit of the Christmas season. Not just the lights, and decorations, but the idea that the holiday is full of giving and love and magic if you let a little holiday in your heart. I like to believe that shines through in what I crafted.
Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?
Thank you! Everyone who take the time to read my books is really giving me a gift.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
It’s as easy to say “everything” as it is true. I adored writing this book. It was a way for me to explore the idea of Christmas in my own way, with characters who varied in their idea and love of the holiday. It was also an opportunity for me to imbue the pages with things and ideas from my own Christmas experiences. It was really a joy to write.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
I’m writing “Cursed,” the second book in the “Jinxed” trilogy. That’s been a lot of fun. I’m also working on some screenplay projects. After I wrap those up I would love to write another holiday novel.
How long have you been writing?
I started writing stories when I was a kid, on this giant, heavy typewriter my father found at his work. It felt so natural to sit there for hours and just type up the things that were in my head. Professionally I began as a screenwriter, co-writing the story for a Scooby-Doo animated film and continued working on other projects after that. I had always wanted to write a novel and finally did that with “Jinxed.” I enjoyed that process so much and can’t see myself not writing books as well as screenplays now.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Write Christmas?
Abby is a cynical greeting card businesswoman whose belief in the spirit of Christmas is tested quite profoundly. She is someone who is trying hard to reconcile her past with her present in order to find her future. Her best friend, Darla, is the mayor of the small town in which they live. She is someone who is all about Christmas and why it is important. They have an interesting relationship and, when things begin to change, it affects everyone around them.
If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Write Christmas who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go, and what you would do.
Without a doubt, Darla. She is fun, funny, and sweet. I could see spending a day with her baking, shopping, decorating, caroling… everything Christmas! It would wind down with hot chocolate, cookies, a good Christmas movie, and a town tree lighting. I’m pretty sure she likes Christmas as much as I do—maybe more, if that’s possible! She also works hard to see the good in people, something I believe is really important.
