Kennedy Deveraux
by Bernadette Marie
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
BLURB:
Kennedy Devereaux, owner of Kennedy Devereaux Designs, is a sight to behold in her signature pink colors, accented with custom designed jewelry. Intriguing enough that Joel Kingsley, the man building the new business next door, can’t help but keep coming around, just to get to know the woman in the designer clothes. He finds she’s not such a mystery, and his charm easily wins her over--until she finds that he’s forgotten to let her in on the secrets of his past.
Excerpt:
Kennedy turned off the lights in the shop, made sure the coffee pot was off as well, and left through the back door, locking it. When she turned toward the tap house, she noticed Joel standing at the back door, his body leaned casually up against the door jamb. Her heart rate quickened. Those dirty jeans and worn out work boots had a sexy appeal, and she had to suck in the air that was now thick around her.
It was a beer, she reminded herself. Just a drink with the guy next door.
“I came out to make sure you were still over there. I thought you’d blown me off,” he said as she started toward him.
Pulling her purse up onto her shoulder, she felt the tug of guilt at his statement. She’d considered blowing him off, but she wouldn’t tell him that.
“I said I was coming, didn’t I? Well, here I am.” She didn’t much care for her tone. It made her sound conceited. She was used to that depiction and probably deserved it.
“Here you are.”
The light from inside glowed at his back, as the shadows from outside made his eyes darken. Kennedy gripped her purse strap to gain some control. He was handsome and just a little mysterious—and completely not her type.
“Are you going to invite me in?” she asked, and he nodded slowly.
“We tasted thirty beers. I’m moving just a bit slow.” A smile crept over his mouth, and she found hers went dry.
“We can do this another day.”
“Nah, I have a couple I want your opinion on.” He reached a hand out to her as if they were casual enough friends, and she would take it—and she did.
Interview with Bernadette Marie:
What made you want to become a writer?
I began writing at the age of thirteen after falling in love with the television mini-series. Books turned into epic TV events, what was better than that? My eighth grade friends and I began to write letters to each other in a notebook, but they were between characters we created. I quickly decided that I could compile my letters into a book, and maybe someday, my books would become a mini-series too. (Now the goal would be a Lifetime or Hallmark movie?)
What inspired you to write Kenned Devereaux?
I had recently finished an 11 book family saga, and it was time to create a new family. The Devereaux family was created, and specifically Kennedy Devereaux, the eldest of the four siblings.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Kennedy Devereaux?
The main two characters in the book are Kennedy Devereaux and Joel Kingsley. Kennedy was fun for me to write because she’s all feminine and pink is her signature color. I built her a boutique with lovely things in it, reminiscent of a boutique my mother used to shop at when I was younger. Kennedy is a strong minded business woman in high heels who takes no bull. Joel and his business partners begin to build a tap house next door, and of course that worries Kennedy that it might divert her clientele. Joel is a family loving man who knows his charms will win over the beautiful woman in pink next door.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
My favorite author is the legendary Nora Roberts. Specifically, I enjoyed her contemporary romance titles. I’ve always enjoyed her characters and the dialogue between them.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
The next three books in the Devereaux Family series are set for release in December, January, and February. These books will follow the next siblings, Chase, Max, and Paige.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I love creating strong, business minded women, and Kennedy is no different. I love building families that others will love as well.
