Anger at her cheating husband spurs grieving war widow Rosemary Hopkins to spend an impromptu night with an overseas-bound soldier. Fearing her small hometown would discover her secret, she makes him promise to not write her. Yet, she can't forget him.

Eager to talk to a pretty girl before shipping out to fight the Germans, Guy Nolan impulsively implies they're married and buys her ticket. The encounter transforms into the most memorable night of his life when he falls for a woman he will never see again.

While Guy tries to stay alive in combat, Rosemary finds work in a secret defense plant and a possible future with another soldier. Will she choose security or passion? Can she survive another loss?

Interview with Barbara Whitaker

For those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book, where should they start?

Wartime separates families, lovers and friends. Because so much of the population was involved in some way during World War II, more lives were disrupted than in later wars. Social norms broke down. The roles of women changed. And grief became widespread as the losses mounted.

How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?

Through stories I heard growing up, watching old movies and reading lots of books.

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

My first goal is always to touch the reader's heart. And my second goal is for the reader to learn something about World War II by immersing them in that time. I hope I've achieved both. Feedback so far has been good.

Anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Thank you for reading my book. You motivate me to keep writing.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I always enjoy the research. In A War Apart I have a personal connection to some of the locations I used. For example, my father was in the Coastal Artillery stationed near San Francisco Bay. So that made researching that area more interesting.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

My next book will be about Kitty's brother, Milton. Readers of Kitty's War will remember he was badly wounded in Normandy so it's a "wounded warrior" story.

How long have you been writing?

Although I started writing later in life, I've been writing for over twenty years. Before that I had stories swirling around in my head but I didn't have time to write them down.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in A ?

Rosemary was betrayed by her husband who then died in an accident, so she hasn't had time to fully grieve both the loss of the marriage and his death. Guy is facing the possibility of death as a soldier going overseas. He desperately wants someone to care what happens to him. When the two meet by accident, both need someone to talk to and the relationship evolves from there.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from A War Apart who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

I'd like to sit and talk with Rosemary's Grandmother Kate Kerr. Her lifetime would have spanned the seventy to eighty years before 1940, from reconstruction through the depression. I'm sure this strong woman would have had some fascinating stories to tell.
