Excerpt:
Chapter 7
Special Agent Mikiko Shikibu opened Special Agent Evelyn Blackwood’s door abruptly. “Hey, Evelyn, you’re needed in the large conference room immediately.”
Evelyn looked at her computer. “I don’t see anything on my calendar.”
“This just came up,” Mikiko said, seeming a little out of breath. “Deputy Director Chisholm and Section Chief Appleton are waiting.”
“Do you know what this is about?” Evelyn asked. The last time Deputy Director Chisholm was in a briefing was when there was the suspicion that rogue Russian agents had influenced several election results. “She doesn’t typically get involved in briefs unless there’s a pretty serious situation.”
Mikiko just shook her head and led the way.
As Evelyn walked into the briefing room, three well- known faces appear on a large screen covering the wall.
“Thank you for joining us, ladies,” Section Chief Appleton said with an annoyed tone. “As I was saying, who can tell me who these three individuals are?”
“Jason Jimenez out of New York, Mike aka ‘Mikey’ Romano out of Chicago, and the notorious Victor aka ‘Big Vick’ Ward out of Los Angeles. They are suspected to be the heads of the largest crime syndicates in the US,” said an eager analyst from the other side of the briefing room.
Appleton continued, “The fact that these three thugs are missing isn’t necessarily something to be bothered with on its own. In fact, I’m kind of glad that someone is doing our job for us. The more concerning thing is that we’ve received intelligence that a new crime boss is moving to town. We believe that this new player is going to make a move to run the criminal organization in much of the western world.”
Appleton paused for dramatic effect before continuing. “Few people can pull this off under the radar. To do so, you need a global network, business fronts to clean your money, and massive legitimate and illegitimate influence to discreetly push things through.”
Appleton stopped and flashed up a photo of one man. He looked tall, fit, and lean. The image showed him walking in a suit with sunglasses and talking on the phone.
This was clearly a surveillance photo, pulled from a file probably filled with other information. Next to that picture, a second photograph appeared on the screen, a close-up of just the man’s face. The man appeared to be in his late thirties, with intelligent eyes, ebony skin, and oddly enough, a big charming smile. The picture looked like it belonged on a professional bio, not a case file.
“We received a tip that this is our guy.” Appleton finished his grand reveal.
“Who is that?” asked Cramer.
“Someone who flies completely under the radar,” Appleton replied. “This is Ori Clayborn, Founder, and CEO of the Singularity Group.”
Deeply Rooted Dreams
Blurb:
This bold and compelling sequel is an evocative page-turner on the journey to a better future.
Since her encounter with Ori years ago, Jessica, an investigative journalist, has continued her mission to print the truth that the world needs to hear. Her pursuit has led her to meet with a source, Zach Carver, a leading mind at Singularity Group. The meeting goes awry, and Jessica awakens to find that she has a gap in time and memory and that Zach is now missing.
What happened? Who is responsible? And how can she help Zach? It is imperative that Jessica find out, and to her surprise, Ori has reappeared to help her do just that.
Malik, an intelligent and inventive young man, is determined to find a way to overcome the virus that has impacted the world. When he crosses paths with powerful people at Confidence Biotech, the leading treatment and contact tracing company, they take an unusual interest in him. Then, all of a sudden, they paint Malik as public enemy number one, forcing him to go on the run.
What do they want from him, and does this mean that he is close to discovering something they couldn't?
Deeply Rooted Dreams is the second installment of The Rewired Series, unveiling more of the universal trial that Ori alluded to in The Recruiter. Alexander Mukte's second novel creates an even more intricate world, striking an engaging balance of mystery and wonder.
Interview with Alexander Mukte
Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?
While I wouldn’t trade lives with anyone, I enjoy thinking about what I admire about other people and the attributes that would be fun to take for a spin. My favorites are the creative versatility of Leonardo Da Vinci and the generosity of Oprah… Just giving everyone in the audience a free car.
What did you do on your last birthday?
Birthdays aren’t too big to me, so we keep it simple unless it’s a milestone. We also have a newborn baby and are putting a lot of our energy there and towards our “big kid.” My wife is nursing the baby, and I cook our meals and keep her fueled. We did a day of no cooking for my birthday, ordering donuts in the morning and dinner from my favorite little neighborhood Italian restaurant. It was perfect!
What part of the writing process do you dread?
Ugh… I think that I dread reading through the finished book right before we publish. By that time, the muse has moved on to something new, and the analytical side of my brain starts to poke, prod, and cause doubt.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
Some days the words come slower than others. I just don’t give in and work towards my daily goal to write a thousand words. What I’ve done to make those words come easier is that after I’m finished hitting my writing goal for the day, I’ll write the title for the next day’s scene. I’ve found it really helps to jumpstart my brain for each session.
Tell us about your latest release.
I began writing my debut novel after the birth of my first son, imagining what I’d like for him to see in the world. This led to a story featuring a Black business leader doing good through empowering small businesses, promoting financial freedom, and countering issues like mass incarceration. I wrote this story to be a fast-paced mystery that would stretch the imagination and hopefully stretch readers’ perception of what’s possible.
The Recruiter is the story of Ori Clayborn, the visionary leader of a multi-billion-dollar corporation. He has principles and a way with people. Leslie is his in-house counsel and right-hand woman. When there is an attempt on Ori’s life, the two are caught up in a whirlwind of events and forced to go on the run, unsure who to trust. The tale unfolds quickly as the characters work to uncover why anyone would want to hurt Ori.
It’s actually the first book of The Rewired Series, and I released book two, Deeply Rooted Dreams, a few months ago. It brings back many of the characters, several years in the future, as a virus is plaguing humanity. The Recruiter definitely leaves some unanswered questions, so I didn’t want readers to have to wait too long for the next installment.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Alexander had an active imagination his whole life, but it wasn’t until the birth of his son that he began putting the stories in his mind on paper. He wanted to be an example of someone pursuing his passion, dreaming big, and taking chances.
Alexander loves people, their stories, and their backgrounds as well as what shapes them, how they think, and what they dream about. He has a passion for learning and is known by most as an intensely curious person who eagerly soaks up anything and everything he can. He dreamt of a career that allowed him to learn new things every day. In writing, he has found a life that allows him to do just that.
After graduating with a degree in business, Alexander volunteered in the U.S. Peace Corps where he aided in creating sustainable small business ventures in Central America. Before taking this leap of faith, Alexander did Business Development and Consulting for large domestic and international companies. These experiences weave themselves into the characters, places and stories he creates.
An avid traveler, Alexander enjoys exploring new places with his family. He was raised in Southeastern Arizona, and now calls Georgia home, along with his wife and two sons.
The Recruiter is Alexander’s first novel, though perhaps the 39th in his mind. We hope you enjoy it, and Deeply Rooted Dreams, as much as we have.

The embarrassment of being the only “un-kissed” girl in senior high is something Sandy Cardington refuses to accept. The first kiss project is her foolproof plan to finally get rid of the status at her birthday party while her parents are out of town.
With several kissable boys on her guest list, this should be a walk in the park. But she didn’t reckon on her older brother returning from college days before her 17th birthday, putting a spoke in her plans. To make matters even more complicated, he has a friend in tow, and the cute hockey player stirs unexpected butterflies in her stomach every time their paths cross.
While Sandy moves heaven and earth to make her party and project come true, she doesn't know that Thane Griffyn is making his own plans to teach her the real meaning of a first kiss.
Read an Excerpt
With my treacly smile still in place, Thane’s dark eyebrows tilt down to a somewhat assessing gaze. He has enough time to read exactly nothing in my face before I spin away, dismissing him without another word.
Furtively, Adrian angles his head to me and arches one probing eyebrow in question. Lips pressed together, I shrug. “PMS,” I mutter and shoot him a look that says: let it go.
While the sauce is cooking and Adrian discusses sports with my brother, the stupid part of me dares a brief glance to the table. Thane has his phone in his hand, but it’s like he feels my gaze the moment it touches him, and his eyes slowly lift to mine. Caught by their impact, I freeze for a second and swallow. The way his lips move, I’m dead sure he’s going to say something but I refuse to give him the chance and quickly return to the other side of the kitchen, keeping my back to him.
I think I hear him sigh.
“Found one in Oceanside. Let’s go!” his stone-cold voice fills every empty space in this room a moment later. All three of us automatically spin around to him. In a swift move, he rises from the chair and shoves his smart phone back into his pocket as he crosses to the door, this time not sparing me a single glance.
“But what’s with lunch?” Cam protests like a petulant toddler who was robbed of his baby bottle as he tags after his friend. “I’m starving!”
“We’ll get you something on the way.” Thane’s tone leaves no room for discussion. The next thing we hear is the front door falling shut after he and Cameron have left the house.
“Seems as if your and Thane’s periods run in sync,” Adrian mutters dryly.
About the Author: I’ve been a storyteller all my life, building bridges into different worlds. Already in kindergarten, I’ve seen the most fantastical things and wanted to share them with everyone. My teacher called me a liar back then. Today, I call it the first real flash of my spiritual gift and the cornerstone of my writing career.
When I got older, I’ve had many visions of a perfect career, while writing has always been more of a hobby and kind of a therapy for me when the longing for more magic in this world once again caught up with me in a crushing way. When my first book was finished, I couldn’t even imagine sharing one of my stories with others, ever. In fact, I only got used to the idea while I wrote my second book and learned in a very miraculous way where the many stories in this world really come from.
It’s funny how, at that point, everyone told me I can’t possibly make a living with writing. They even warned me not to quit my job. But after my debut novella PLAY WITH ME came out and sales skyrocketed within the first week, I knew I could do anything I wanted if only I never stopped dreaming.
That’s also part of what I teach my students in writing and spiritual workshops today. Always dream big! If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.
Some personal stuff:
“I’m writing stories because I can’t breathe without.”
Disney is my attitude to life, and if I could I’d save the world from itself. My Patronus is a wolf, my wand the broken twig of an apple tree, 13 ¾ inches with a unicorn hair core. I can’t deny that on some days, I prefer my book characters over real people, but there’s not a single day going by where I wouldn’t try to find magic in reality. And when I’m alone, I love to listen to the many stories of the wind in a mystic mid-summer night.
So you see, I’m lucky enough to live in an enchanting world of my own. It’s peaceful there and full of magical things, fairies and wonders. You’re welcome to follow me there – if you’re ready to open up your mind and leave everything you learned about reality behind. But beware, if you dare to step through this door, you may never want to leave again…

The last dragons in the kingdom were killed a half century ago. At least that’s what twelve-year-old Eliana has grown up hearing. Imagine her surprise when one morning in the forest she finds herself eye-to-eye with a young dragon named Winston who is just as terrified as she is. Overcoming her fear, Eliana reaches out to the shaking dragon and miraculously can understand what he is telling her just by touching his brilliant emerald green and turquoise scales. Winston says his father has been missing since the last full moon, and she vows to help. Together, they seek out the King for guidance, but upon reaching the castle they realize that short, frazzled King Halwyn has problems of his own. The kingdom’s treasure is missing and the tribute to the Overking is due in a few short weeks. If unpaid, Halwyn will lose his kingdom to the Overking’s feckless nephew. Elianna and Winston must work fast, discovering the gifts and courage within themselves to find the treasure before their kingdom falls into the wrong hands, and people and dragons perish forever.
About the Author
At six years old, Laura Findley Evans wrote her first story about a man named Brill who flew to the moon. When her teacher asked her to stand up and read it to the class, she learned just how powerful a story can be. A creative writing major in college, she has written many more short stories, some of which were published, and one that won an award. The Dragon and the Girl: Due North is her first novel. It began when her grandchildren said one night (when they were supposed to be sleeping), “Tell us a story.” And so she did. Laura would like you to know that whatever she writes must be true, whether it is real or not. She hopes you will discover the truth in this story.
