indiscernible elements: Calcium explores the path a molecule can take through various stages of life and death - from the perspective of Calcium itself. through the use of detailed illustrations, poetry, and dialogue, author Korynn Newville creates a discussion around how humans can change the way they create the built environment to be more conscious of the wondrous systems at work in nature. if the same Calcium in a femur bone can be used in concrete to build a cathedral, a house, a sidewalk or can be recycled by a nearby plant or tree, how can humans purposefully help that process along? what would Calcium design if it had the choice? what would Calcium say if it could tell you its story.

What is your schedule like when you’re writing a book?
It was evenings and weekends, having to make that spare time. It was also about creating that habit, because if I spent enough time away then I couldn’t pick up where I left off. I think that was the biggest learning curve.
Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?
I didn’t, this book is my labor of love and my artistic ability. It’s important for readers to learn and know the artist behind the book. I feel it can bring a connection to the story.
Have you ever gotten reader’s block?
Of course! My whole book was a reader's block! It has very little text and I am trained as an architect, it is easier for me to draw than write. In fact, I was on a white-water raft trip down the Green River in Utah. It’s a 5-day trip on the river. I started writing in the dark on that trip, when I was exhausted, and that is how I started forming Calcium’s voice.
Does your family support your career as a writer?
I am very fortunate that they do. My family has never been the type to impose their believes of what I should or shouldn’t be doing with my career and life. They allowed me the space to become who I am.
How many hours a day do you write?
I write and/or draw for an hour a day, at the very least.
If you could invite any three people for dinner, whom would you invite?
Donna Haraway, Ana Tsing and one of my dearest friends that would enjoy it.
Would you share something about yourself that your readers don’t know (yet)?
This book has a body of artwork that goes along with it. Work that was made alongside the book.
Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
When writing/drawing this book, neither of these crossed my mind. I let it flow to what it is today.
