Heather’s soul soars when she’s hang-gliding, skydiving, kayaking, or piloting a helicopter during search and rescue missions. She’s taken the term adrenaline junkie to a whole new level. However, she’s never enjoyed sex and never had an orgasm.

Instead of giving up on her, Kyle, a long-time friend who convinces her to be more, brings an experienced Dom in to help. Marcus explains she only enjoys extreme sports, so she needs to try extreme sex since the normal kind hasn’t worked. Marcus is all Dom, and helps Kyle bring Heather alive sexually.

Just when Heather thinks she has everything figured out, she learns the details of how it worked when the two men shared a girlfriend for years while they were in college.

Interview with Candace Blevins

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I currently have seventy-one published books, and another dozen-ish that are partially written. My favorite series is my Only Human series, which is the series that ties all my other books together. If you don’t like urban fantasy, it isn’t necessary for you to read it in order to enjoy the romances in my other series, but you’ll see Kirsten show up in lots of other books, and the Only Human series tells her story. Also, book seven ends with an HEA, so there are romantic elements. And, since this is me writing, it has lots of kinky sex, too.

If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

The Safeword: Mayday books are a duet, with the first novel bringing the threesome together (two men and a woman), and the second book adding in their fourth. Also, some of the ‘baggage’ we see in book one is resolved in book two.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

Within the Safeword series, each couple’s story stands on its own. There are some connections, but if you aren’t interested in reading a particular couple, it’s fine to skip them and jump to the next. Some couples have one book, others have multiple books.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

Heather is a pilot, so Mayday is the perfect safeword for her. My husband suggested she could use the Morse code tones for SOS, which is one of the many reasons I love him, but no.

How long did it take you to write this book?

I began writing Heather’s story way back in March of 2010, and I’m finally ready to publish it in 2023. I’ve come back to it several times, intending to finish it, but the ending to the second book just wasn’t there. I wasn’t happy with it, so it wasn’t ready to publish. This time? Everything clicked, and Heather’s story is finally ready for other eyeballs besides mine. I have no idea how many hours I’ve put into these two books, possibly a thousand or more.

What did you learn when writing the book?

For a variety of reasons, I know a whole lot about sensory processing disorder, so it’s natural for the subject to make it into my writing. I wrote about one end of the spectrum in the Wicked Inked duet, and this book covers the other end of the spectrum — someone who feels no pain, and who needs extra stimulation in order to feel alive. In order to feel anything, really. Still, researching how adults deal with the disorder, rather than only focusing on children and teens, taught me a few things I hadn’t already known.

Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?

Yes. For years, people asked me when a specific character was going to get his book, and I couldn’t tell them he was going to have to die during the big battle between good and evil that happens during the Only Human series, but that’s why he never got his own HEA. I would’ve either had to kill both him and his true love, or left a widow, and it just wasn’t in me to do either. Killing him off was hard enough, but you can’t have a great battle without losing important people.

What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?

I live with them a while, talking to them in my head as I go through my day, until I learn all about their quirks and personality. I figure out how they talk (Southern or another dialect; proper English, common English, or do they slaughter all the grammar rules while still managing to communicate), their mannerisms (Do they clench their jaw when angry, or maybe their fists, or perhaps they cross their arms over their chest. Maybe they run their hand through their hair when thinking, or touch their jaw, or rub their neck?), how they dress, and what made them the way they are. Also, once I have their backstory, what baggage they’ve already dealt with, and what’s left over that I can deal with during the book — or that everyone’s just going to have to live with because hell will freeze over before they deal with it.

Thanks so much for having me on the blog today!
