The very contrary fairy sure has a lot to say about what she must do each day. But when she decides to run away, will she make it home in time and stay?

Interview with Julia Hurley

Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction?

Not sure what think differently really means. I have always loved to read series books. My favorite series is Harry Potter, naturally, however; I have completed many trilogies starting with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys when I was only 9. Moving into Lord of the RIngs in middle school and on to Steven Kings entire series along with Anne Rice as a YA. Fell in love with HP during college taking a Children’s Lit class and have been a huge fan ever since.

How do you select the names of your characters?

The names actually come after the story. It’s the last step really.

Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?

This is a creative question. I have a hidden meaning in this book for sure. I think a lot of single dads can see it.

What was your hardest scene to write?

For me it was the dad coming to rescue the daughter and explaining that he too was contrary and that she is love for who she is and that it is ok to be who you are.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

A lot of connection in the Enchanted Garden Series. Each character relates to the previous book.

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

The goal was to create a bond book for daughters with their fathers. I hope fathers read this to their kids

What inspired you to write The Very Contrary Fairy?

That’s a long and personal story but I am happy to share it if there is time

Can you tell us a little bit about the next books in Enchanted

Garden Series or what you have planned for the future?

Sure! Nona Begonia and her family are in charge of caring for the begonia flowers the fairy families live in. Nona get tired of her family duties one day and doesn’t contribute causing a disaster for the fairy’s… what happens next?~
