Interview with Author Dawn Taylor for her story “Pepe” in
the anthology “A Haunting of Words”
What inspired you to write “Pepe”?
I have always feared
and loathed clowns, so when the A Haunting of Words anthology called for
submissions, I chose a clown as my ghost entity. I fear clowns because they hide under a façade
of grease paint and outlandish costumes and their behavior is always
unpredictable. With so many people sharing coulrophobia, I knew a story of a
clown hiding under a woman’s bed would strike terror in in a lot of readers’
minds.
Can you tell us a little bit about your
next book or what you have planned for the future?
My debut novel, “Something’s Not Right
with Lucy,” is a psychological horror story scheduled for an early 2018
release.
Can you tell us a little bit about the
characters in Pepe?
Diane is a recent
college graduate who accepts an intern position with a prestigious law firm in
San Francisco. Her excitement is short lived when she learns her first
assignment is to cheat a widow out of millions of dollars. When she makes the
decision to abandon her values and accepts the challenge, a clown, Pepe,
appears under her bed in nightly visits. He performs circus tricks and keeps
her awake half the night. As Diane ponders the reason the clown appears, and
more puzzling––what is it he seeks from her––Diane’s coworkers reveal an
unsettling event that occurred in her apartment. Can Diane connect the dots and
save her sanity to win the attorney position she covets?
You know I think we all have a favorite
author. Who is your favorite author and why?
My favorite author is
Stephen King. I admire the way he twists an ordinary event into sheer horror.
My love for the psychological horror genre began by reading his novels. My
favorite is “Needful Things.”
If you could time-travel would you
travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you
like to visit this particular time period?
I would travel to the
past, since the unknowns in the future frighten me. I’ve always been drawn to
the 1940’s. I love the styles of homes, furniture, and clothing of that era. I
also think the world was a kinder, gentler place when neighbors looked out for
each other and before the excesses of the 1950’s occurred. Since I currently
live in the Midwest, I would likely time-travel to a farm and experience that
life style.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends?
Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
My pets are all rescue animals. I have a Border collie named Minnie who herds
my three cats and keeps them in line. Her assistance is appreciated when I am
writing and need to remove at least one cat from my keyboard.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy
schedule to visit with us today.

Clowns seem to have made a comeback this year with the reboot of "It" and the American Horror Story "Carnival" season. Your story seems to fit right in with the movement, and it's a fantastic story!
Great interview, Dawn. "Pepe" is the kind of story that makes me want to check under the bed every night. I look forward to reading your novel!
Thank you Avid Reader for inviting me today. I am excited to engage with readers who love ghost stories. A Haunting of Words contains a variety of spooky stories to read during October or any time. Dawn Taylor
I think, at least for myself, the unpredictability of a clown's behavior is what makes them so unsettling. Pepe performs several of the typical clown gags in Diane's room. While its humorous when a clown hurls a cream pie into a spectator's face, Pepe's actions are more sinister. Is that a trail of multicolored scarves up that clown's sleeve, or evil lurking? Clowns ...
Good job, Dawn. Pepe was indeed a contender for scare my socks off.
I enjoy reading the Blurb, congrats on the tour! Thank you for the chance to win!
Loved the story. Do you think every since the first clown appeared people have been scared of them?
HI, this is Sunanda Chatterjee. Pepe was one of the scariest stories in the anthology! Congratulations!
Sounds Incredible.
The anthology sounds fantastic.
