After
being orphaned, high school student Josie Barton only has one person she can
turn to when things get rough—a mysterious legal guardian who calls himself her
Benefactor. “Ben” takes care of everything for her. He pays her bills, provides
food, clothes, and even a cell phone. But there is one thing Ben doesn’t know:
Josie Barton sees scary imaginary creatures everywhere she goes. Even her
apartment is being haunted by an invisible monster! And just when Josie thinks
things couldn’t get any worse . . . she meets the guy from across the hall.
Zeph
Clemmont is a man of many faces. He’s a changeling with enemies in all the
worst places, fighting to undo a magical curse that could end his life. He
loves a good argument and has incredible magical power, but he may have met his
match in Josie. So far, she’s the only one who seems able to rein in his
childish tantrums and magical explosions. Zeph will have to swallow his pride
and finally let go of all his dark secrets if he really wants to break his
curse. And with Josie at his side, he might actually stand a chance this time.

Interview with Nicole Conway
What inspired you to write Mad Magic?
It all started with Zeph.
As with most of my stories, it’s usually the creation of specific
character that sort of launches the entire project. This one caught like
wildfire. I wrote MAD MAGIC four
years ago with the idea of blending the notion of faerie tales and folklore
from many different cultures, but I wanted to take a new approach, too. I
wanted to make it uniquely mine somehow. It took a while to find the right
balance of danger and magical faerie mischief, and since then the story and
characters continue to evolve and amaze me. Zeph came first, however, so this
is all his fault—something he would probably be proud of.
Can you tell us a little bit about the
next books in the Mad Magic series or what you have planned for the future?
I currently have two more instalments planned for the MAD MAGIC series: VICIOUS VOWS and WICKED WAYS.
All will be narrated by the same main character, Josie Barton, and continue to
follow her journey as she navigates the world of dark and dangerous faerie magic.
There will be cameos throughout of characters from the first book, as well as
appearances of some well-known traditional faerie tale icons like Jack Frost.
It’s going to be a wild ride!
Can you tell us a little bit about the
characters in Mad Magic?
There are three main figures that are the focus of MAD MAGIC. The narrator, Josie Barton, is a 17-year-old high school
student trying to keep her normal life together while she struggles with
ancient faerie villains and unearthing her own mysterious past. She grows a lot
through the novel, coming into her own and seizing control of her own fate—as
well as that of the man she loves.
Zeph Clemmont is a faerie changeling and talented shapeshifter with
enemies in all the worst places. He has a well-earned reputation amongst his
own kind as a troublemaker, rogue, and hothead. It takes Josie no small amount
of effort to get through his gruff exterior and magical tantrums to figure out
who he really is—a fiercely loyal man hiding a heart of gold.
Last but not least, Eldrick Dorchaidhe is a puca with a massive chip on
his shoulder. Known as the enigmatic son of the Boogeyman and “Prince of
Nightmares,” Eldrick has no love for humanity and has worked diligently to
avoid them. That is, until he finds himself bound in servitude to Josie. Now
he’ll either have to swallow his pride and reassess his initial opinion about
humanity, or risk miss the opportunity to heal old wounds and move forward.
You know I think we all have a favorite
author. Who is your favorite author and why?
It’s so hard to choose! I guess Rick Riordan would be my absolute
favourite. I love his interpretations of mythology and whimsical, genuine
characters. His stories never fail to entertain!
If you could time-travel would you
travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you
like to visit this particular time period?
I’d go to the past to the Regency Era. I’d love to visit some of the
places Jane Austen references in her works like Derbyshire. I guess I’m a
little bit of a romantic, but the balls and parties they had then sound like
they must have been fun!
Do you have any little fuzzy friends?
Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
I do! I have a cat, named Mr. Darcy, and a dog named Phoebe. Both are
actually being fostered by family and friends in the United States right now
while we are finishing up our term in South Korea. We decided not to bring them
along and subject them to the chaos of the long flight and confined living
space. We are a military family, so we move a lot, but they are good sports
about it!
Thanks for taking time out of your busy
schedule to visit with us today.
