Excerpt:
You
see, my father was evil—seriously evil. During his relationship with my mother,
he brutalized her and some of my siblings in ways that she won’t speak about to
this day. He was often filled with rage and that rage showed in his physical
violence. His brutality was never just saved for my mother. He once punched out
my five-year-old step-brother; literally punched him in the face. I couldn’t
even imagine what that would be like for a small child. Miss B hated him so
much that her hatred poured into me from the time that I was just a toddler.
She couldn’t stomach the sight of me for the simple reason that I was a part of
him.
These
aren’t my memories and most of which I know is fragmented, as no one wanted to
talk about the man. What I know of him was learned in piecemeal over the years.
He
was the kind of man who would rather see you dead than see you leave. I’ve seen
several men like that while watching Law & Order. It’s shocking to know
that things like that actually happened in my own family. My mom is such a
great woman that the thought of her being hurt is a little hard to take at
times. When my mother finally decided to get us all away from him, she had to
wait until he went to work. Then, she packed up our things and left home. There
was no warning; no threats of leaving him. She knew what he was like and she
knew it was best to slip out without telling him.

What
book that you have read has most influenced your life? Could you give a little
insight as to how it influenced your life?
I found You are a
Badass by Jen Sincero just after I had gotten out of an abusive
relationship. I was obviously feeling pretty low
and I was in and out of depression. I happened to be in a Chapters bookstore and the yellow cover really stood out to me. I brought it home and
started reading it right away because I wanted to feel like a badass. I forgot
who I was and I needed to be reminded of
how amazing I was.
Since then, I’ve learned a lot about reprogramming the
mindset and leading a positive life through positive thinking. Not only was Jen
Sincero right about that aspect of myself but I came across the book during a
time in my life where I wasn’t particularly feeling like a badass. I remember
thinking as I was scanning the books on the bookshelf that her particular book
spoke to me.
This is the kind of book that is
great even for people who aren’t big readers because it’s funny. It’s a
comfortable read almost like sitting down for coffee with your best friend
getting advice. That’s what it’s like reading this book. During a chapter
titled “Your Brain is Your Bitch,” you are given ways in which you can
reprogram your mind to think positively instead of negatively. The last tip in the chapter was my favorite and it left a smile on my face. “6.
Love Yourself. Unless you have a better idea.”
It’s the kind of self-help book that helps you improve
your life without busting your ass about it. There are no judgments throughout
the book, so it doesn’t make you feel bad about your past mistakes. The book
gives you a way to acknowledge how you sabotage your own life, and it gives you
the steps you need to stop doing that. You
Are a Badass, shows you how to create the life that you want and to live it
right NOW! If you are struggling financially, Sincero gives you the steps you
need to take to reframe your mind so that you can bring an abundant amount of
money into your life. It gives you the tools you need to start making those big
bucks every single day.
“Everything you do
along your journey contributes to where you’re going.”
I have read the
book twice already and it’s the kind of
book you will keep on your bookshelf for future reference. Sincero shows you
what it means to be a badass and to wake up with that feeling every day. She
will show you how to stop doubting your “greatness” and show you how to live
the awesome life that you have always dreamed up. I know one thing is for sure,
if you weren’t a badass before, you would feel like a badass after reading this
book.
After the reading the book, I felt so much better about
who I was as a person. If anything, I was so grateful that I got out of the
abusive relationship and that I could look forward to what my future had in
store for me.

Seriously! The comedic and sassy perspective will make you see
things differently, and you may even find yourself laughing out loud. It's a
good story and one that I truly believe needs to be told. Period.
It’s dark, raw and takes you to a door that keeps all my innermost
secrets. I hope that the book makes you laugh, makes you cry, and inspires you
to be the best version of yourself.
