A calculating cold-blooded predator closes in…

When a community has barely recovered from a ruthless serial killer six months earlier; now two more horrifying murders hit the radar again. It leaves police burdened with two of the most shockingly contaminated crime scenes ever documented in California’s law enforcement history. The Slayer works behind the scenes as a sinister puppet master, precisely pulling the strings, taunting the police without leaving any viable evidence, and orchestrating his killer hit squads.

The sheriff and district attorney bring in the best investigators. Reunited again, Dr. Chip Palmer, a reclusive forensic expert, joins DA Inspector Kate Rawlins to sort through the crime scene aftermath in search of the truth—all without a probable suspect or a solid motive. Complicating the investigation—sparks reignite between the two.

Ratcheting up the suspense, Chip suffers a nasty fall hitting his head, impairing his perception and giving him a mind-blowing ability for specific detailed recall. Palmer and Rawlins assemble an unusual team including a rookie detective, a forensic supervisor, and an ex-military operative turned bodyguard. After one of their own is kidnapped and the investigation is taken over by the FBI, the now rogue team must pull together their own resources—alone—with a killer waiting to take each one of them out. Scene of the Crime takes no prisoners and leaves everyone fighting to stay alive.

Interview with Jennifer Chase

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Scene of the Crime?

Scene of the Crime is a forensic mystery about a reclusive forensic scientist, Dr. Chip Palmer, recruited by local law enforcement requesting his help in a very unusual murder case. He joins DA Inspector Kate Rawlins to sort through the crime scene aftermath in search of the truth—all without a probable suspect or a solid motive. Complicating the investigation—sparks reignite between the two.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

The next installment for Chip Palmer, Evidence of the Crime will be out Fall/Winter of 2018-2019. My next Emily Stone Thriller, Dark Lies, will be released Fall 2018.

How long would you say it takes you to write a book?

It takes approximately two months to write and complete a novel, and have it ready for the editors.

What is your favorite childhood book?

There are many, many favorites, but the one that stands out if The Secret Garden. There are so many things to love about that story, to me, it’s timeless, and still one of my favorite books of all time.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters from Scene of the Crime who would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.

I love this question! Well, I wouldn’t want to spend a day with a serial killer. But, I would love to spend the day with a forensic scientist and criminal profiling expert, Chip Palmer. His easy going personality and his forensic knowledge would be a kick for me. We would visit several crime scene locations where famous events occurred, and I would ask him his profiling opinion about a dozen or so serial killers.

What was the hardest scene from Scene of the Crime to write?

I don’t know about hardest, but I spend extra time on my crime scene investigations and forensic information. I want to make sure I get this information correct and make it engaging for the reader. Even though I have an education and some expert forensic knowledge, I still research information.

What made you want to become a writer?

It was my love of books and reading as a young child. You could spend an afternoon transported anywhere. It wasn’t until 2008 when I wrote and published my first novel, Compulsion, and I’ve never looked back.
