Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: You Only Live Once by Haris Orkin @HarisOrkin @RABTBookTours
Humorous Thriller
Date Published: March 21, 2018
Publisher: Imajin Books
Synopsis: James Flynn is an expert shot, a black belt in karate, and irresistible to women. He’s also a heavily medicated patient in a Los Angeles psychiatric hospital. Flynn believes his locked ward is the headquarters of Her Majesty’s Secret Service and that he is a secret agent with a license to kill.
When the hospital is acquired by a new HMO, Flynn is convinced that the Secret Service has been infiltrated by the enemy. He escapes to save the day, and in the process, Flynn kidnaps a young Hispanic orderly named Sancho.
This crazy day trip turns into a very real adventure when Flynn is mistaken for an actual secret agent. Paranoid delusions have suddenly become reality, and now it’s up to a mental patient and a terrified orderly to bring down an insecure, evil genius bent on world domination.
Interview with Haris Orkin
Can you tell us a
little bit about the characters in “You Only Live Once.”
“You Only Live Once” is about James Flynn, a patient in a
Pasadena mental hospital who believes he is James Bond. He thinks his
psychiatrist is M and fellow mental patient is Q. When his hospital is taken
over by a new HMO and his psychiatrist is let go, Flynn escapes to save the
day. He carjacks a twenty-something orderly Sancho and leads him on a very real
adventure to save fellow patient Dulcie Delgadillo, a recovering meth addict
with an abusive biker boyfriend.
Can you tell us a
little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
“You Only Live Once” is my debut novel. Previously I was a playwright, a
screenwriter, and a writer and designer of video games. I’m currently working
on a sequel to YOLO and a new virtual reality video game. I also have an audio choose your own
adventure game coming out in two weeks for all Alexa enabled devices. It’s a sci-fi comedy called “They Came in
Outer Space.”
How long would you
say it takes you to write a book?
If I could work nonstop, I believe it would take me about
three months to write a first draft.
Though as I’m always working on other projects, I’m thinking it’ll take
me a year to write a sequel.
What is your favorite
childhood book?
Harold and The Purple Crayon is the first book I
remember. I loved how he could change
the world and create anything with his magic purple crayon. It’s great a metaphor for being a writer or
any kind of artist. I actually created a
video game where the player character can change the world simply be changing
the story. The game’s called Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.
If you could spend
the day with one of the characters from “You Only Live Once” who would it be?
Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would go and
what you would do.
I think I would pick James Flynn, my deluded hero as he is
witty, entertaining, and totally without fear.
I would want to go scuba diving with him in the Bahamas and then spend
the evening playing baccarat at the Atlantis Paradise Resort Casino, drinking
vodka martinis and helping him handle all the beautiful exotic women he would
attract with his good looks, charm and raw animal magnetism. (Don’t tell my
wife.)
What was the hardest
scene from “You Only Live Once” to write?
The hardest thing for me was finding a suitable antagonist
for Flynn. The Bond villains were all
bigger than life. I wanted a bigger than
life villain that would still be very believable and very relatable. I also wanted a villain as deluded as Flynn.
What made you want to
become a writer?
I’ve wanted to be a writer for as far back as I can
remember. I loved reading and movies and
disappearing into other worlds. To be
able to create my own characters and worlds was endlessly interesting and
satisfying and it still is. Unlike a lot
of writers, I actually enjoy the process.
