Review: Carpe Noctem by Katie Salidas @QuixoticKatie

Carpe Noctem
Immortalis Vampire Series #1
by Katie Salidas
Published: March 2, 2010
Publisher: Rising Sign Books
Genre: Paranormal, Vampires, Fantasy, Romance, Adult

Blurb:

Bloodlust, fanatical vampire hunters, thousand-year old vendettas, and a pair of sharp, new fangs. Newly-turned vampire, Alyssa got a lot more than she bargained for when Lysander saved her from a pair of rapist on the college campus of UNLV. Immortality is not as pretty as all the books and movies had portrayed it, and Alyssa's having a hard time with the change.

"Becoming a vampire is easy. Living with the condition, that's the hard part."

With danger looming on the horizon and the vampire hunters closing in, Alyssa will have to find the strength to accept this terrifying new reality. There's no turning back now. It's either, Carpe Noctem (seize the night), or final death.

My Review:

A young college student Alyssa is walking home alone one night when she is corned in an alley and viciously attacked by couple of guys who appeared to Alyssa to be students themselves. Alyssa is beaten to within an each of her life but then a stranger steps in to save her. The only way to save Alyssa is to make her immortal by turning her into a vampire.

Carpe Noctem is Alyssa’s story of how she became a vampire and the road that she had to travel to survive as a vampire. The road that she had to go down was a lot harder for Alyssa than some. As Alyssa herself stated it was easy becoming a vampire but living as one was the hard part. Knowing that now she would have to kill and feed from mortals to survive. Learning to drink blood instead of eating food was hard for Alyssa too.

Following a different set of rules other than her own was hard for Alyssa. Alyssa enjoyed her freedom of living on her own and being her own boss and taking care of herself. Being a vampire changed all of that for her. She wasn’t allowed to go out alone but what Alyssa did not understand was the rules was for her safety as well as to keep mortals safe from her as a newbie vampire she is weak yet and not in control of her own desires for a mortal.

Carpe Noctem puts a new twist on the vampire world making the story so much more interesting and very intriguing. I really enjoyed getting Alyssa’s insight on what it was like to be a vampire and how it changed her world and how she had to give up her old life and live in this new world of all the changes that  it consisted of. I liked getting to know what it felt like to Alyssa as the changes in her took place. The writing was so descripted that I could almost feel what Alyssa herself was feeling. I can’t wait to see what adventures Alyssa finds herself in with book two of the Immortalis Vampire Series.

I highly recommend Carpe Noctem to all fans of vampires and the paranormal with a little romance as well.
