Sophella's Birthday Wish
by Maggi Nicholas
GENRE: Children's Book
BLURB:
Here is a modern fairy story about a little girl who has the gift to move between the fairy world and the human world. Her birthday wish comes true when she wishes to fly with the fairies, and so she is able to go on a magical journey with the fairies whilst using her human side to rescue animals and kids in a way that fairies cannot do. Throughout the journey she comes to realize her own strengths as she protects the penguins and rescues the dolphins with great bravery and compassion. During her heartwarming adventure. Sophella forms new friendships and demonstrates life-affirming lessons that can inspire us all.
Excerpt:
“Make a wish, make a wish!” chanted Sophella’s friends. They were at Sophella’s 8th birthday party and her friends were all gathered round her birthday cake.
There were 8 fairies on her birthday cake. Each wore a dress of a different colour purple, blue, yellow, green, aqua, peach and red but Sophella’s favorite was the fairy in pink. Sophella took a deep breath and blew out all the candles then closed her eyes and made a wish. “I wish I could fly like the fairies!”
My Review:
Sophella's mom gave her the best birthday ever. Well, that is until the pretty little fairy shows up. On Sophella’s birthday cake were fairy candles, Sophella takes one to her room and keeps it on her nightstand. When she wakes up the fairy is there waiting to make her wish come true. Sophella is going to be a fairy for the day.
Sophella was so excited she was going on an adventure and get to fly around with her very own fairy wings. Sophella and her fairy friend flew from one corner of the Earth to another meeting new friends along the way. Sophella got the chance to help her new friends in ways that the fairies could not.
Sophella's Birthday Wish is a fun sweet little read that is sure to keep your little one entertained for hours. Sophella's Birthday Wish is full of fun, magic, and adventure. Come join Sophella as she flies over clear blue oceans with the dolphins then they were off to the cold and ice to help out penguins and then on to more adventures.

Interview with Maggi Nicholas
What made you want to become a writer?
I wrote stories as a child and always said I had a novel in me as an adult but life got too busy with a job, husband and family as well fitting in my other passions so when I retired. I looked at my five incredible grandkids and decided to write a story for and about them.
What inspired you to write Sophella’s Birthday Wish?
I love words and writing and I enjoy exploring the fantasy aspect of storytelling. I would wake up in the early morning with new themes running in my head and couldn’t wait to write them down. I wanted to write a feel-good story for young kids that also carries positive messages which I think are very important for shaping a world of kindness and caring in our little ones.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters Sophella’s Birthday wish?
The first character we meet is Sophella. I invented her name from a combination of my two granddaughters names, Sophie and Ella and I think the result is pretty and original. Sophella is a little girl who, at her eighth birthday party, makes a wish to fly with fairies. Her wish is granted the next morning when a fairy called Farah appears and takes Sophella on a magical journey. Sophella the girl becomes Sophella the fairy with Farah’s magic touch and together they meet new friends and lend a helping hand wherever they can.
Farah is Sophella”s mentor and guide in the fairy world. Her name means happiness in Islam and, true to her name, she brings happiness to all she meets.
Aqua is a water fairy who loves all the sea creatures. Her colours are the blues and greens of the sea with white wings to match the white caps.
Sweetpea is a special fairy who nearly got eaten by a toad who thought she was food. She escaped but her wings were damaged and she can’t fly. She doesn’t let her physical challenges stop her from having fun and rides on her friend Bonny Bluebird.
Henry is a handsome being with pointy green wings. He is clever and charming and speaks the many languages of the farm animals.
Beatty is a bee fairy who works among the bees and looks out for their health and well-being. Beatty asks Sophella to relay a message to Lulu Bugbeoff to stop spraying pesticide on her garden because it hurts the bees.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Ken Follett is undoubtedly my favourite author because most of his novels involve real history. I like to see how the real events of the past have shaped our world today, all wrapped up in amazing non-fiction adventures. I love his characterization and the psychology behind the actions of his characters. His writing brings alive his characters in a way you can recognize in today’s world.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
I love the time travel concept. It occurred to me that Sophella, though written for all little kids, is probably going to be more popular with little girls so I wanted to write a fantasy story that would be enjoyed by boys as well as girls. My next book is for slightly older kids and involves a team of time travellers who visit our world in 2222. Plenty of scope for fantasy as well as a glimpse of how our problems in today’s world might be solved in the future. My favourite character is a 10 year old nerd in 2222 who has an extensive history app in his head which he can access with a head wiggle!
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
Imagination is a wonderful pleasure and with fantasy there are no limits. I hope I have put my imagination to the good and inspired little readers to dream good dreams while embracing reality in a happy way.
