Runaway Train
(Runaway Train #1)
by: Lee Matthew Goldberg
Release Date: April 29, 2021
Genre: YA
Summary: They told me I was an out-of-control train about to crash…
Everything changed when the police officer knocked on the door to tell me – a 16-year-old – that my older sister Kristen had died of a brain aneurysm. Cue the start of my parents neglecting me and my whole life spiraling out of control.
I decided now was the perfect time to skip town. It’s the early 90’s, Kurt Cobain runs the grunge music scene and I just experienced some serious trauma. What’s a girl supposed to do? I didn’t want to end up like Kristen, so I grabbed my bucket list, turned up my mixtape of the greatest 90’s hits and fled L.A.. The goal was to end up at Kurt Cobain’s house in Seattle, but I never could have guessed what would happen along the way.
At turns heartbreaking, inspiring, and
laugh out loud funny, Runaway Train is a wild journey of a bygone era and a
portrait of a one-of-a-kind teenage girl trying to find herself again the only
way she knows how.

Interview with Lee Matthew Goldberg
What made you want to become a writer?
I’ve always been a writer. Even as a kid I used to write books about my dog getting into adventures, so it was a career I was born to do.
What inspired you to write Runaway Train?
I’ve published thrillers but I wanted to try my hand at YA. Because I’m far from a teenager now, I thought it would make sense to set the book in the 90s when I was that age. I didn’t expect for it to become a three book series, but now the second book will be out this summer.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Runaway Train?
Runaway Train follows Nico Sullivan in 1994, who goes off the rails after her sister suddenly dies. Her home and school life is a mess, so she decides to run away on the encouragement from her two delinquent friends, Winter and Jeremy, to do every item on her bucket list, culminating with becoming a singer in a grunge band and meeting her idol Kurt Cobain.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
So, it’s far from YA, but my favorite author has always been F. Scott Fitzgerald. I remember reading The Great Gatsby in high school and it blew my mind. It really made me realize that I wanted to be a writer as a career. It’s a book I reread every few years.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
Sure, the sequel Grenade Bouquets is up next on August 5th and follows Nico as she becomes a successful singer in a band, but soon, the band begins to fall apart because of jealousies and rivalries.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I loved listening to a lot of the music that takes place in the book. It reminded me a lot of times from when I was that age, so it was a cool nostalgic journey to take. Nico is also a fun character to write. She’s witty, she’s blunt, she’s a force. It’s allowed me to stay with her for the sequels.
