Interview with Tatiana Beller

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

I currently have one eBook published and four Vellas. All of them are part of my story world, Chronicles of a Planet’s End. Since they are all part of the same story, I don’t really have a favorite. Kind of Human, the eBook, is the heart of the story world. The other books grow out of that. When the story world is complete, it will have journals from twelve different characters and each character will have between five to eight journals.

If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

Kind of Human is the heart of the story world, Chronicles of a Planet’s End and the first of The Banister Chronicles. The second journal will see Emily Banister step into the power she inherited and face the enormous responsibility handed to her. I am hoping it will be out this year, first on Vella and then in eBook format.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

Both. A book must stand on its own. It must be a clear story with a beginning, middle and end. I think Kind of Human can definitely stand on its own. It is also the first in a series and part of a huge story world. Each chapter begins with a date. In the books on Vella, each chapter title is a date. The reason is because technically it is possible to read the world horizontally or vertically. If you read a date, you can see what every character is doing on that date. The stories interconnect. All the characters at some moment interconnect. The part I love is that because each character lives their own experiences, it becomes a completely different story.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

I knew the story is about Emily Banister coming to terms with not being quite human. I spent a lot of time on Google and a thesaurus to figure out a title not previously used that fit this idea. Chronicles of a Planet’s End is really a very direct description to the whole world.

How long did it take you to write this book?

The book began as a movie. I wrote it in 2012. I shot the film in 2013. I have not had the funds to finish editing it. I loved the story. I already had a story world with three other novels I hadn’t published. I decided to join all the stories into one world. I wrote the first draft of the book in 2020 as the pandemic hit. I had gone to stay with my mother in Mexico and was unable to return to the US for nine months. I did a lot of writing.

    What does the title mean?

Kind of Human refers to the main character who is not fully human. Chronicles of a Planet’s End refers to all the chronicles that make up the story world. It is about the end of Earth. The Banister Chronicles separate Emily Banister’s story from the other journals.

What did you learn when writing the book?

Because the book began as a movie, it was a lot of fun to just create a larger world for the book. As an indie movie, I was limited by budget. I had to keep things simple. It is a story of three people: Geoffrey, Tristan, and Emily. When I began the book, it was as if the whole universe opened. It was fun. I learned that I need timelines and spreadsheets for characters, worlds, and events to make sure they coincide with the other books in the world. I think that is the most challenging aspect of writing.

    What surprised you the most?

I love and hate Tristan Jasper. I didn’t expect to like him as much as I did. I am now publishing his own first journal in Vella. He is a hard character. He is a horrid man. Yet, he needs to be likeable. I want to like him. I want Emily to like him despite what she knows. He must be charming. It is hard to play the balance. I never want him to read as if I accepted his actions as okay either. Violence and especially violence against women is never okay.

Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?

Yes. I do kill off great characters. If the story requires it, then they must die. I cry through the whole process. The story must drive the characters. Some stories just require characters to die. It is heartbreaking.

What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?

I think my writing process, especially because all of Chronicles of a Planet’s End is journals, is a bit like acting. I must sit and just feel the character telling the story to the deepest part of my soul. Once I’ve felt the character, then I can write from that perspective. All other characters are seen from the perspective of the one writing the journal. For example, Emily Banister sees Tristan Jasper as a charming, dangerous goofball. He doesn’t see himself that way. Geoffrey perspective of himself is very different than how others see him. Their journeys are impacted by how they see themselves and how others see them. I think it is similar to how we function. In the Vella, Beginning with Death, Geoffrey is a romantic hero to Cassandra Alexander. For Emily, he is so much more complicated than just a romance.
