Sent to live with her strict, aloof, and uncaring uncle after her parents are killed in a car accident, twelve-year-old orphan Alyssa McCarthy longs for the life she used to have—one filled with fun and love. Then one stormy night, a message appears in the raindrops on the window that will change everything.
"Your life will never be the same again, as magic will interfere."
Before long, Alyssa is kidnapped by Master Beau, a banished sorcerer with a mysterious connection to her who can only regain his power by weakening hers. Suddenly hurled into a world of wizardry filled with fantastical beasts and marvelous technology beyond her wildest imagination, Alyssa must defeat Master Beau if she ever wants to get home again. But Master Beau will stop at nothing, including using Alyssa’s friends, to ensure he is triumphant.
Interview with Sunayna Prasad
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I currently have 3 books in the series. The 3rd installment is my favorite.
If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?
I am hoping to get it ready for publication within less than a year. I have been slow with it for various reasons but need to get myself to write more.
Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
The books are part of a series, but they need to stand alone to prevent readers from getting lost.
How did you come up with the title for your book?
I thought about the content and then surveyed a bunch of people on a site to ask if it was strong. The majority said that it was.
How long did it take you to write this book?
The first edition, published in 2013, took nearly 2 years to write. Then I updated it in 2018 and republished it as a revised version.
What does the title mean?
It’s kind of obvious – the main character has to face dangers while in Fiji.
What did you learn when writing the book?
How to write natural-sounding dialogue, the writing craft, and how to develop the characters.
What surprised you the most?
That I needed another round of edits recently, according to someone on a forum.
Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?
Nope.
What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?
I sometimes do internal thoughts, if necessary. I’ve written in different POVs in the 2nd and 3rd books. So, I had to use different knowledge for different characters.
