The Rise of the Dawnstar
The Avalonia Chronicles #2
by Farah
Oomerbhoy
GENRE: YA
Fantasy
BLURB:
The
seven kingdoms of Avalonia are crumbling and evil is spreading across the land
like a plague. Queen Morgana is close to finding a way to open The Book of
Abraxas and it’s only a matter of time until she uses the power trapped inside
its pages to enslave the entire world.
With Avalonia growing
more dangerous by the day, Aurora must travel through war-torn lands and deep
into the heart of the fae kingdom of Elfi. Her goal is to find a legendary
weapon infused with the last of the realm’s ancient magic—the only weapon in
the world powerful enough to stop the queen.
Aurora might have
survived her first battle against Morgana, but the true fight to save her
kingdom and restore her throne has only just begun…
Excerpt:
A hush fell over the usually rowdy
room, and no one moved.
The tavern was too crowded for us to
use magic and fight our way out – somebody might get hurt and Rafe knew that.
It was just my luck that I would get caught and dragged back to the Summer
Palace before I even got halfway to Illiador.
But it wasn’t me they had come for.
They didn’t seem to know who we were.
The guards moved forward and
surrounded Marcus, pulling back his hood and holding swords to his throat.
Marcus didn’t move, but his shrewd, dark eyes darted back and forth between the
door and the guards.
The captain of the town guards
walked into the crowded room and a chill wind followed as he slammed the tavern
door. His uniform was a dull blue, and mud stains speckled the front of his
tunic. He strode over to Marcus, a plain sword held loosely in his beefy hand.
“Is this him, captain?” the guard
holding Marcus asked his superior.
“I believe it is,” said the captain,
a sly grin spreading across his pockmarked face. “Well, well, well, if it isn’t
Marcus Gold, Brandor’s most infamous black market trader.” His voice boomed
across the hushed room, as he pushed his straggly brown hair out of his face.
He eyed Marcus warily, a cat playing with his prey. “You and your dirty magical
items don’t belong in my town. You should be more careful of the people you
work with. Looks like your last customer didn’t mind squealing your whereabouts
in the torture chamber.”
I winced at the word torture, but
Marcus’ expression remained unclear as to what he was thinking. The tavern
customers shuffled backwards, huddling against the walls and trying to stay out
of harm’s way. Many of them moved towards the door but the guards did not let
them leave.
“You have the wrong man,” Marcus
said smoothly, staring the captain straight in the eye.
“Oh, I don’t think so.” The
captain’s eyes gleamed almost manically. “There have been bodies turning up dead
all over town, and you were seen leaving one of the murder scenes.”
My heart had started beating so
loudly I was afraid everyone would hear it.
“I have no idea what you are talking
about,” said Marcus calmly.
“Should we take him to the dungeons,
sir?” asked one guard.
The captain nodded, his face hard.
“Take him, I will deal with him personally.”
Just as the guards started pulling
Marcus towards the door, a thin, gaunt man, who had been sitting at the table
next to us, came and stood in front of the captain, his eyes bloodshot. He
wrung his hands and shifted from side to side as he spoke.
“I saw them, my lord,” he said,
pointing at us and addressing the captain in a simpering voice. “They were all
whispering together in a corner.”
“Were they?” said the captain. His
muddy boots clumped on the wooden floor as he walked towards us.
I tensed, and my magic flared to
life.
My Review:
In The Last of the Firedrakes Aurora spent her time getting
to her father’s family and her ancestors on her father’s side. Aurora met her
Granduncle, Aunt and Cousin.
Aurora leant that she was a fae-mage and that the Queen and
her men were after Aurora and wanted her dead. Queen Morgana is afraid that
Aurora will take her rightful place as the Queen if she allows her to live.
Morgana will do everything in her power to stay in control and be the Queen.
Aurora must learn who she is and how to use her magic
without losing control. Aurora is a very powerful fae-mage. Magic like Aurora’s
has not been seen for a thousand years or more. The people are afraid of Aurora
and no one wants to help her. They are so afraid of her that they are helping
the Queen but they are afraid of the Queen as well.
Aurora is very strong willed and thinks she knows what is
best for her and the kingdom and so sets out on her own against her Granduncle’s
and everyone else’s’ wishes to do what she thinks is right but she soon learns
that sometime it does pay to listen to your elders. After running into a little
trouble Aurora finds herself doing want her uncle advised her to do in the
beginning. Aurora goes to her see her mother’s mother who is the Queen of the
fae.
In the land of the
fae Aurora is trained how to use her fae magic. Aurora really does a lot of
growing up in The Rise of the Dawnstar. She realizes what she must do to win
the fight against Morgana. She knows that she must learn to control her magic
if she intends to win and help the seven kingdoms and keep Morgana from taken
control of all the kingdoms.
The Rise of the Dawnstar is filled with lots and lots of fae
magic. I love fae magic because it uses all of the elements of the earth like
fire, water, air, spirit and the earth. The Rise of the Dawnstar will keep you
guessing from the first page until the last page. You will have no desire to
put it down it will have you in its control rushing through the pages to see what
Aurora is going to do next and how she is going to defeat the Queen.
If you love magic, fae and fantasy then you will love The
Rise of the Dawnstar. So why not pick up your copy today!
